Title: Getty buys Scoopt
Post by: luder / Luís Brás on March 15, 2007, 18:56
I just received this news in the last iStockphoto newsletter:

"Citizen journalism innovators Scoopt  (http://www.scoopt.com)are now part of Getty Images. The emerging source for user-generated editorial content has carved out a reputation for having the latest images in citizen amateur journalism. Scoopt members who have an accidental front row seat to headline-making moments contribute their images and video of breaking news from around the world to Scoopt, which are then sold to the international press. And yes, Exclusive photographers will be able to submit images to Scoopt."

I knew about Scoopt before, but it never interested me much. They seem to be looking for unique photos that weren't captured by the press, so I guess one has to be really lucky to make it there...

What's your thoughts on it?

Here's an article from a different perspective:

There is a 12 month exclusivity on the image and the photographer gets the standard Getty 40% return AFTER they have been paid for the image.

I submit to a different agency - Citizen Image.  It's the same concept only a new agency and the staff is very friendly.  There is a 3 month exclusivity on newsworthy images only.  Never sold anything there though  >:(

I think there is another agency through Photolibra as well but can't remember exactly.  I've had better success marketing directly through the local newspaper.

Also forgot to mention that the Association Press (AP) has a deal with NowPublic.com so that they can use "citizen generated media content".  This happened back in February.

The agency owned by Photolibra is called Splash News.

I submitted some stuff from Schwarzenegger's Inauguration to Scoopt last month, but so far no sales...probably because I was so late in sending them.  At the time of the inauguration I hadn't yet heard of Scoopt.

I just read an article on it too.  Apparently with the Getty purchase, commission went down from 50% to 40% and exclusive period went from 3m to 12m.

The advantage though is that if the photo is good, they will put it on the Getty editorial site.  You can expect a few DL if that was to happen!

Worth joining up just in case I happen to be somewhere when something happens and I have my camera and I take a good shot and there are no other photags there.
