Title: Picturk has nothing to do with stock
Post by: Picturk on August 07, 2012, 04:27
Back last year there was a post on Picturk in this forum: http://www.microstockgroup.com/microstock-news/picturk-to-harness-irish-camera-clubs-to-provide-stock-imagery/. (http://www.microstockgroup.com/microstock-news/picturk-to-harness-irish-camera-clubs-to-provide-stock-imagery/.)

We're not in the stock business - we never were in the stock business.

Picturk is a tool for photographers to run the photography contests that are important to them.  Professional  Photography Awards, International Salons and exhibitions, Festivals, amateur club and inter-club competitions. We are not a stock agency - or new take on stock. The article referred to in the post does not describe what Picturk does.

Just to be clear: we don't do rights grabs, we support resonant photography contests for real photographers. We don't do stock, we don't do Facebook competitions.

Are there so many camera club competitions that there was a need for an entire site dedicated to uploading and judging?  Guess so.

What happens to all those image once the 'contests' are over?

They either go into the bin OR, they are exhibited at the Louvre in Paris. Take your pick. :)

My very tiny club has five internal competitions per year, a local 'battle', a regional inter-club competition and a national competition. Bigger clubs have several more they can enter. So yes, for sure, though we don't need the site as half of the competitions are for prints.

Don’t know about the cameraclubs, but nearly all other competitions I see here have always at least these three rules:
1-   Send your image per email.
2-   Minimum size….mp.
3-   We become the owner of your images.

Colette's last point is why Picturk exists. Most competitions are rights grabs - Facebook competitions are total rights grabs. Competitions ran on Picturk are NOT rights grabs. The photographer retains ownership of their IP. That's very important.

The Camera Club competition is there to help photographers take better pictures - the idea is to get people out of their comfort zone to try something new and test their skills and aesthetic against their friends in the club. Its a great opportunity to learn and get and give feedback. Its a lot of work for the poor competition officer to manage - we're trying to make it easier.
