Title: (Ir)resistible
Post by: microstockphoto.co.uk on March 25, 2010, 10:02
"Irresistible! Polylooks is giving money away! Photographers will receive 0.25 EUR (approx 23p) for every image provided exclusively to Polylooks"
http://uk.polylooks.com/irresistible/ (http://uk.polylooks.com/irresistible/)

am I the only one to think this is not so irresistible?

if I upload the same picture to Shutterstock, I am likely to earn more than 0.25 EUR within a day after uploading, and they are not even requiring exclusivity

how can a site with very little sales pretend that someone is giving away his/her pictures this way? if they didn't require exclusivity at least...

(ok, I know we are doing some free advertisement for them by posting here but who cares... after all I'd really like to see a European site succeed - despite their very little appealing special offer)

Who would want to take them up on this offer?  I would want a lot more for a site that doesn't sell much.  Can't find how long they have to be exclusive for, I would do it for a week :)

What I found even odder was that the website is powered by a german division of T-Mobile and on that website it links to all kinds of partners like pollylooks ... ummm I don't get it. What kind of potential buyers are they trying to market to? Buyers that hang out on their cell phone service providers website ??? Is there a hidden market where kids in germany thinks it's cool to license RF images to use as wallpaper on their cell phones? LOL Just seems kind of goofy to me.

Randy, that can be explained: Polylooks was founded by Deutsche Telekom which again owns T-Mobile. They started off with a German site and rolled out to UK a few months ago - according to their initial press release, Telekom wants to complete their portfolio by a microstock portal, they run platforms like musicload, gamesload, softwareload, videoload - guess you could call Polylooks also imagesload! :-)
I initially uploaded a few photos with them but had only one sale in the penny range since then. I guess Deutsche Telekom has quite some money and marketing potential they could invest, however haven't seen too much of that over here in Germany yet. Their current offer to me definitely does not make any sense - someone at Polylooks seems to have seen the DepositPhotos´s upload bonus and came up with a VERY creative idea then.  :'(

ahhh trying to shove their hands into every basket they can possibly think of .. from the look of downloads on the site they should probably stick to all their general consumer markets.

That's the only reason I took Polylooks into consideration: if a new site should ever succeed, it could be this one being powered by such a giant as Deutsche Telekom, which is involved in virtually ever media channel from mobiles to internet to digital tv. Unfortunately we'll still have to wait for now.

That's what everyone thought about SnapVillage too and we all know how the Corbis giant fell down on that one.

Are there really still people out there who believe that a new micro agency will take off and accumulate a library of images in the 2 to 5 million range within one or two years?

Every single new agency that was founded in the last 3 years never made it to the top 5, not even by a long shot. Where do these people get their business loans from?

deposit is at almost 1.2 mill, adding 60-70k a week, not bad going for being so new (amazing what happens when you throw money around). More importantly they are getting some sales, most subs but still promising for so new.  I think it is still possible IF you have a LOT of money to start with, I think the days of starting with a website and doing SEO tricks are long over.

when I looked at them about a year or so? ago, polylooks were only taking people from certain countries because of trying to work out withholding taxes.

Veer is not doing very well indeed, but - compared to many other new agencies - has A FEW sales instead of NONE

Deposit are also giving free credits to buyers.  I'm amazed how few sales there are.  They need to have more ideas, as throwing money around doesn't seem to work any more.  Remember Pixmac?
