Title: 500px
Post by: nitrus on January 21, 2015, 19:53
What is 500px. They have 50,000,000 pictures, they say, and the ones I saw were really good, maybe not altogether  stock images, but good. They aren't listed here. Can anyone tell me?

I just dumped them. They can keep my $17.  Upload was impossible and no watermarks on big images.  There are threads in her on 500px. Do a search and you might find more details.

Good luck.

Hey nitrus,

500px is a photo community for discovering, sharing, selling, and buying amazing photography (full disclosure - I work there). Our community's photos are available for licensing at prime.500px.com. You're right - it's not your typical stock photography marketplace.

The link KnowYourOnions posted is a bit out of date now, a lot has changed over the past year :) We now offer one of the highest royalty rates in the industry - 70% net for every license sold.

Mantis, I'm sorry to hear you had trouble with uploading. If you like, shoot me an email at [email protected] and hopefully I can help address some of your concerns.

i go in to looksee the site. i was discouraged because their photographers look more the same bunch at flickr, all looking for thumbs up and likes. the commission and big sale potential are nice but
they don't look like they want to sell anythiing for us, just gain traffic like flickr, fb,social media boredom.

Reviving this thread to add my first true 500px Prime experience: I just had a $245 sale. That's a personal record. Even on Alamy I've never received more than $150 on a single sale before.

That's been my experience. I've sold three there since summer. Not a lot, but at $175 a pop, it's not so bad. I only have 60 or so images up. The sales potential is there. They have a new $50 web license, but I'm not sure what that does.

Before I waste a lot of time on this - could someone give me a quick bottom line on 500px?  Is it another exclusive club that accepts a chosen few, or can anyone come in?  Do all photos get exposure or is it another crazy 'curating' game like Crated?  What's the 'catch'?  Every new site has one :-)

But you don't have to pay to sell images and earn money :) If you need some extra "sweets" than yes, pay some $ for this.
If you have free account you upload up to 19 images weekly. My first sale came around 30-50 images in port.
You can sell some images exclusively for higher money but you chave a choice still.

Now the bad news - they don't give watermark on images that can be easy shared, so you have to do double work: prepare and upload small size with your watermark, and then upload oryginal size to shop so you could sell it. I don't understand their policy in that thing. It's not so complicated to set up system to do this work for us...

Not sure when this started but they have a deal with Adobe now where you get PSCC subscription along with your premium membership for $13.75 per month. So the 500.px membership is really only costing you 3.75 per month.

Get a sale and it covers your membership for a long time.

Personally, I don't have a CC subscription but am thinking pretty hard about getting one, seems like a good deal.

My run-down of 500px is simple:

1. I joined them before there was a (true) sales function, because at the time I was looking for an alternative to Flickr, which was more and more looking like Yahoo had finally run it into the ground. I like online photo pages with social interaction features (the "likes" everybody around here hates so much) and I had over the years made very positive experiences with sales through them (people messaging me because of a photo on Flickr and me ending up making a direct sale).

2. It turned out they were different from Flickr in a couple of ways. Mostly, their much sleeker design and inherent focus on quality rather than quantity in your portfolio attracts a very different crowd. Many "fine arts" folk and less of a "gear enthusiast" community like Flickr tends to attract. Not judging here, I am more of a gear enthusiast myself, but I like looking at fine art, so I like both.

3. I never paid a cent to them. I have a free account, and at the moment I don't think I see the need to upgrade. Maybe for their portfolio function, but I shall decide that later.

4. Today, they are a site were I put my most "artsy" photos, the ones I myself like best. I then link to it when I want to show someone what I can do. So they are a portfolio. However, they also have their market, and while this was my first real sale, it is a very nice one.

5. Yes, I ended up *getting* $245. I don't know how, it must have been some license that is not shown among the standard stuff. Contributors get 70% (gasp!), so the sale must have been for $350.

I just took a brief look and I'm totally confused.  On at least one photo I saw what appeared to be a print option.  I tried to find a 'contributor' or 'seller' section that laid out the terms and options, but failed after wandering around their too-cute site for a while.  For example, it says you get 70%.  But of what? Do you set your prices or do they?  Do they read IPTC?

I freely admit I just don't have the patience for this stuff anymore... especially sites that are all over you to "Sign Up" before you can even read their terms.

UPDATE: found a FAQ of sorts, and this statement:

"Please note: We will close the 500px Art market as of late 2015. To continue selling photos on 500px, submit them to 500px Prime. To continue purchasing printed art from 500px, visit 500px Prime, where you can purchase full resolution digital images for printing through an online provider, such as Gallery Direct."

So now I'm even more confused.  No way am I selling anyone a full size image.

For now they sell both POD and licenses. You as a contributor get to choose whether to allow one or the other or both per image.

Your confusion is understandable. Part of this is that 500px and 500px Prime are being kept apart quite thoroughly, with 500px being the photography community and Prime being the marketplace. As a contributor, you contribute by enabling your 500px (i.e. community) photos to be sold on 500px Prime (i.e. the marketplace).

Prime is relatively new and before it existed, there was already an option for selling POD and -- as you describe -- direct downloads for private use. That part, the art market, wasn't separated from 500px and is now closing. In fact, the direct downloads for private use option is already gone.

The licensing model is RF. They take editorial and commercial. As for royalties, they pay out 70% of the gross sale, so *a lot* more than anybody else. The shown prices in Prime are $50 for web/social, $250 for a regular RF, and $750 for "products for resale", i.e. an EL. As I already remarked, math says my recent sale must have been for $350, so there must be other (irregular) options as well.

My target is not the people who search free images and try to clean the small watermark from Prime in order to use the image. My target is the real clients who pay and use legal images. I'm not worried about stolen usage, just don't care :)

No, a big part of my images there are typical microstock(but not white isolated or some kind of simple microstock) and the other part are premium not exclusive macro content.

I paid the $17 fee and signed up with 500PX last August or thereabouts.

I closed my account a month later primarily because:

I could not upload more than 10-20 images at a time without my meta data not accompanying my images. I had 3,000 images to upload. They kept telling me it was me. Then others started complaining and I don't know if they ever fixed it.

I did not like at all the response to watermarks where it was recommended that I watermark my own and upload them to 500PX then upload another separate batch to Prime. This was getting ridiculous.

I closed my account and gave up my $17, although they did offer a refund. I would consider going back but only if these issues are addressed.

Hi,

I have a couple of questions/requests.

MarcvsTvllivs - Any chance you would link your port on 500px and/or the photo that sold?

Semmick Photo - Do you sell the same port on FAA and 500px? Do you also sell these same photos on Micros? I remember back in the day selling the same stuff on micros and higher paying markets was a big faux-pas but that seems to have be less so now.

thanks!

Semmick Photo - Do you sell the same port on FAA and 500px? Do you also sell these same photos on Micros? I remember back in the day selling the same stuff on micros and higher paying markets was a big faux-pas but that seems to have be less so now.

thanks!
Damien

Sorry, I try to maintain plausible deniability when it comes to my identity here. I want to be able to candidly speak my mind and not fear agency retribution (this isn't particular to 500px btw, I am using my real name on all agencies).

To describe it (even though I suppose that would make me identifiable to a 500px insider, but oh well...): it is a photo of a locker-lined hallway. Nothing too special in terms of artistic value, but not "standard" stock either.

I'm on 500pix and have sold two images when I had about 150 in my portfolio. I want to upload a lot more but I can't seem to find if you can upload directly to prime. I always upload via 500pix and submit then to license to sell. Is it possible to upload directly to 500prime? Does anyone know?

Hey hofhoek,

There's no way to upload directly to Prime right now - for the moment, you upload your images through your 500px account, then enable them in your store and submit them to Prime. If you're running into your 20 uploads per week limit, I'd be happy to upgrade you to a Plus account (unlimited uploads)  :) Just shoot me an email at adri [at] 500px [dot] com with your 500px user name.

Congrats on your sales btw - hopefully you have many more to come!
