Title: Tired of "another new microstock site"?
Post by: kowali on April 07, 2009, 03:08
Instead of creating "another new microstock site", we are working on something at the opposite.

We are creating a new site for buyer to post photo request that is location-specific. For example, a buyer could post a request and ask for photos of farmers market in Seattle. Local photographers in Seattle could then enter their bids for the request.

Since this is not a microstock site, I am not going to post the site until people here post back and tell me that they are interested.

Thanks.

There's already sites like this, the response I've seen is that either the requests are very obscure or that the requested images is not worth doing for the amount offered.

I'm sure you'll get the odd new photographer desperate enough to take up such offers but I think you'll find that the majority of decent photographers will give the same advice:

If they want a commissioned photo go and commission a photographer!

Itīs all about the money.    Not many would bother doing a custom-shoot for 0,25-28$ minus gasmoney.

The microstock prices are for microstock-sites were we just upload and wait.....and wait.

RT,

Do you mind send me a personal message, and let me know some of the sites that are already doing this?

Thanks.

http://www.photographersdirect.com/sellers/requests.asp Here's one. Not location specific, but I don't think you'll get enough requests to make it interesting to go and check regularly for updates in your area.

I particularly liked request no. 8825 from last Wednesday...  I think I'll see if I can get some of those...

Hahahaha! Well I already have one of Palin chasing icebears eating donuts in the wild as seen from the moon, so don't bother about that one.  ;D

"Because you will always deal direct with clients when selling images through Photographers Direct, we are non-exclusive. This means we have no restrictions on photographers selling the same images through other agencies. The only exceptions are microstock sites such as istockphoto, canstockphoto, shutterstock, dreamstime, bigstockphoto, crestock - we cannot represent photographers who market any of their images on these sites."

Give bright-colored logo T-shirts to all the participating photographers.  Then when we get to the location, ready to spend an entire afternoon making photos for 30 cents apiece,  we can see the swarm of other guys already on the site.

I think it's a good page to get inspiration and ideas about what buyers need.

Guess there is a market for polar bears eating penguins, both for the buyers who better, and for the ones that don't. Could be fun making one, unfortunately I have pictures of neither species.

Citizen Image did that. They had a lot of requests for such a small site, mostly for celebrities if I remember it right. The site however died a few months ago. If you have good contacts among buyers, this may work, but I agree that not at microstock prices, unless for very trivial images.

To do so, you have to bring a polar bear from north pole to south pole and then take pictures of the bear eating penguins.  Or you can catch some penguins on the south pole and bring them to the bears on the north pole...

Then if you sell 30000 photos of your bear you can make some profit...

And remember to bring back the bear!

I think a polar bear under a palm tree with Palin serving cevapcici would sell much better.  ;)

I had to seek it on the internet...  "Ćevapčići" is the diminutive, so you'd better use the formal "Ćevapi" also as a keyword.  ;D

For curiosity, do you translate the special characters such as č and ć as c?  I do that type of thing, but I wonder if this the correct way that search tool interpret them too.  I have many images from the Baltic Countries with strange characters.  (sorry for diverting from the original subject)

Sounds like "spec work" or speculative work which in the illustration biz is an evil term.

I think it would be a little bit cheaper to do it in photoshop. ;) That's why I wrote "making" the picture instead of "taking" the picture.

Obviously the polar bears, penguins and Palin are well covered, I'm planning a shoot of the upcoming joint exercises between the Bhutanese Navy and the Costa Rican Army practising seaborne assaults in Bolivia.  ;)

I think I read on at least one site that English characters area accepted only so I translate my non English letters to English.

It's going to take another 60 years for Costa Rica to recruit that non existent army; methinks it's far easier to get that elusive shot of George Bush dressed in tie dye, spotting a rambo headband, holding a flower in his left hand, and making the peace sign with his right hand. oh, and have his arms around Fidel Castro  , rofl
