Hi Guys,

I got a photo buyer that is wanting photos in Jpeg2000 format and I got some questions about that.

1.  I have all my .jpgs IPTCed.  If I convert over to Jpeg2000 will these IPTC tags get destroyed?

2. If the IPTC tags get destroyed, is there a way to re-encode this information back into the file?  If so, what software do you guys use for that?  I use Irfanview to IPTC jpgs, but is there software out there that can tag Jpeg2000 files?

3.  Considering how .jpg is a lossy format... should one convert from .jpg --> tiff --> jpeg2000?  Or is it OK to convert from .jpg --> jpeg2000?

Any assistance any of you can provide would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I just tried opening a JPEG in Photoshop CS5 and saving it in JPEG 2000.  It gave the new image file an extension of .jpf, by the way.

PS then gave me a large window with a series of options, as you can see in the attached screenshot.  So the answer is that JPEG 2000 can do anything you need.  The question is whether your specific encoder can.

Oh, and I don't see any reason to convert to a TIFF first.  JPEG to lossless JPEG 2000 will produce identical image bits.  Lossy JPEG 2000 will produce artifacts no matter what the source, but are likely to be no worse when going from a JPEG than from a TIFF made from a JPEG.

Hi Disorderly,

I don't have CS5... only Paintshop Pro X4... but unfortunately it doesn't give me the option to save a Jpeg2000 with the metadata.  I can save lossy or lossless and determine the level of compression for the lossy... but sadly PSP X4 doesn't provide me with any options for saving the IPTC info for this particular file format.

I saved a file as a JPEG2000 lossless just to see what it would do, but it PSP X4 strips out the IPTC tags and the EXIF info.

Do you (or anyone else)  know of a freebie program that will keep the metadata when converting JPG to JPeg 2000?
