Author Topic: On a different note... what do you think about the Nikon D850? (Read 6174 times)

I'm lucky I am in the position to purchase this if I want - although I still need to be able to justify the cost.

To get the lenses I'd want to get with it (1 or 2 good quality ones, probably a 250mm since the 600mm is a monster size lense, and maybe a 25-70mm) - would probably be about $6000-$7000 total.

Is it worth it?

The 'main' advantages I see are:

a) Good night shots for timelapses
b) More accurate color quality/better motion tracking night shots/videos as well.

But - at the moment not sure if that would be sufficient to recoup my cost on the investment, + make a profit. Of course it would be fun - but - need the profit on it as well.

What are your thoughts?

I sold all my Canon stuff and moved to Sony in mid 2016. Been very happy and I think the newer A7Riii sounds like a great update to the one I have.

I can't really see how anyone else can answer that....whats it replacing? Whats your income now and by what %age would you need to increase it by over say 5 years? Does that figure look plausible to you?

Income varies, but I can buy this if I want. Just need to justify it.

It's not really 'replacing' anything (I have other cameras for specific purposes). I think for me right now it would just be a really cool, but expensive toy.

So although I'd "really" like to get it (because I did test out some night pictures, and it took really nice night shots compared to say a sony I have) - I'm not sure if simply being able to take better night shots would justify the cost. Unless, of course - I can figure out what niche needs to be filled where people are like "man, I'd LOVE a beautiful night shot of ________" and I can fill that.

So trying to figure out if the Nikon D850 really has any other major strengths I may have overlooked, perhaps that someone else who may have looked at the same camera is aware of...

SO... I guess maybe that is what I am asking. Have you played around with it, and if so - what did you like best about it?

Personally I would never pay that much for 38-cent downloads on stock, but if it's a toy it doesn't matter. Have fun!

If you need it for a *real* professional work buy it for sure, it is the best full frame camera today and will stay on the top for at least 5 years.
If you need a camera for the 25¢ microsctock game buy an iPhone or the Samsung equivalent, their advantage on the D850 is that you can also use them to phone and go on the web…

I have D850 and I'm really happy :-)
But you should consider to buy also very good and expensive lenses to reach the best quality with this excellent body

The D850 is an epic camera body. If you’re a professional photographer, or you have the money to buy, then yes buy this camera body.

I have one and love it. The one issue right now is live view tethering is not working with Capture One. They say they will fix it in the next C One update (this is a big issue for me). Otherwise the camera is great and I would recommend it. Love the extra pixels.

@Chichikov - lol - yeah... At the moment, I am doing this for fun/microstock photography. (I am in a completely different business than photography - although I do rely on good quality images/video in it), but I enjoy doing the photgraphy aspect of things). So I don't actually say, do weddings or stuff like that in that kind of 'professional' sense. So good point.

@jefftakespics2 - Mm, yeah, I hate it when tethering doesn't work. One different camera I have is an amazing camera (nikon - actually I think I have a few) - but then I found out it can't do tethering properly either - so was a bit disappointed. Good thing to know about the d850...

@tk113 - lol, yes, I do have the money to buy it. But 7k is at the moment still a good chunk of change (not yet quite like buying a bag of potato chips). So I still have to think about it

Its the best FF camera you can buy but its an overkill in microstock for sure. I use it for commissioned work only and sometimes for a trad-agency where they want Tif files but yes! its a fantastic dslr!
