Title: brands as keywords
Post by: trabuco on April 03, 2019, 04:12
Hi:

Do you know if brands can be used as keywords in creative content? f.i. "les paul" and "gibson" in a les paul type guitar without logos?

Thank you.

Definitely not on iStock. I don't know what other agencies' policies are - presumably you have PRS or the images couldn't be used commercially anyway?

"PRS"?

Well, I've read on SS that I can't use them. No matches found searching by "Gibson Les Paul".

In AS searched by "Gibson Les Paul" and there are pictures.

So... I think I'm not going to include them, gonna use "mahogany" o thinks like that instead the brand.

Would be better the same criteria.

You can submit them as "illustrative editorial" and only if the guitar is a Gibson Les Paul and Shutterstock should accept them (barring any technical issues of quality).

Include the phrase illustrative editorial in your keywords and use the standard editorial description place - date: etc.

Mostly NO unless it's Editorial, as in

The same would apply to any Trademarked or protected names or products such as Nike, Ford, Mattel, Disney... you get the idea?

Thanks for the answers.

I understood this for the titles and objects logos, but the confussion was for AS. Anyway the better option is not to include these keywords.

When I shot my guitars I use to focus cutting the part with logos and using my hands to cover them if are on pickguard f.i.

All of these pictures are accepted as creative, except on BS, where all of them are rejected and submitted as editorial.

The only one that works properly for me is SS. Slowly, but soon yet.

Not a good future for this business.

I've got a similar issue with footage. Do you know if footage can be accepted as illustrative editorial?

And I've got a few more questions if any of you know, that'll be greatly appreciated!  ::)

- Does the description need to have the brand name? Or can I just mention 'camera' instead of 'canon 5D' for instance?

- I've got visible actors in the footage, and I have model releases for them. Should I upload the model releases or not? (editorial with release is usually rejected).

Thx in advance!

Yes it can.

It doesn't need to have the brand name. It's optional. And it's only really possible if the footage is editorial. In the case of editorial footage, including the brand name and model in the description would certainly be beneficial.

If the camera is identifiable and you include the brand name / model in the description, it will have to be editorial. And in that case, the model release forms essentially become invalid and can't be used.
