could the name, thats showed at the portfolio be important?
That Customers buys rather from a "photo-steve" as from a "godzillafreak59" ?
or is it totally irrelevant

The customers buy from Istock, shutterstock so on....I dont' think they care for the name...and yes, there are some freaky nicknames out there.
Some people use nicknames because they don't want people to know they produce work that can be had for a few bucks or cents, while they are doing custom work for their own clients and charging a decent amount of money...They would rather have their real name associated with the latter.
Other people want to be known by their microstock work, or don't care about using their own real name.

The question wasn't "why do people use nick names" but rather does a nick name hurt sales and it's one the the better questions that has been asked on this board for some time.
There are a lot of names one could use to mask their real name that still sound professional, godzillafreak59 is not one of them. If I were buying an image I would certainly question the professionalism of the contributor but would it keep me from buying the pic? Probably not. If the image is high quality and suits my needs then I'll buy it.
I would likely not give a photo credit to "godzillafreak59' though.

that maybe useful for contributors which stock sites has "sort by username" search options.

I think if the name is easy to remember then customers might return more often. I know artists who chose a name that is difficult to spell or confusing and then it becomes hard to find their portfolio again.
Also remember that many artists donīt speak English or your first language isnīt theirs, so having a name that is easy to remember across different languages might help.
In the end your name is a brand that people can recognize across various agencies.
I didnīt think about that when I signed up originally and used the same alias I had at university. But I became known as cobalt, so now my website is cobaltstock.
I think if I would start out today I would chose a name that is more subject related.

Yes its important. However more important are images that we have in our portfolios. But name as someone mentioned already can play crucial role in client remembering you.
It should be possible to change name anytime you want by writing to the support.
