Title: Hand copied/drawn world maps copyrights question
Post by: PhotoIlustrator on June 24, 2015, 04:11
Can I use hand copied (drawn with my graphic tablet) world maps from google search library for my stock illustrations background? Is this legal?

Thanks for answers.

Sorry for my bad english.

The outline of a country or continent is what it is.  I dont think there would be an issue, but I dont know for sure.
If you would literally copy the map 1:1 its a nono I guess, but copying the outline of a country or continent seems ok to me.

Good question, I wondered about this myself. Just wait what others will say.

I think you are okay as long as you are using a public domain map, like those provided by the US governement

It depends on the agency, I think. Shutterstock allows illustrations derived from NASA images, but you must say "portions of this image provided by NASA," or words to that effect, in the title/description.

iStock - and I thought SS had recently said effectively the same thing - says that if you have a reference image used for a vector, you need to provide the reference art and you need to own the copyright to it (or it's in the public domain).

If you're tracing a copyrighted map, I think you have a problem. If you can find something public domain to trace, you should be OK

Yep, and on top of that you should have a reference image saved in case of a lawsuit, make sure you are protected.
