Title: Hello, and a little help on self hosting
Post by: stuartrenn on January 12, 2014, 13:48
Hi all

First time posting here, just registered

I still have a small stock portfolio which I'm working on making larger. I'm a contributor on most of the big stock sites now, iStock and canstock being my main two so far.

I have noticed many contributors have their own self hosted sites allowing digital downloads through those sites. How is this done and where do I start? What are the hosting options and costing implications? And do they generate many sales?

Thanks for any help

Stuart

No, they don't really generate that many sales.

On your own site:

On a hosted platform:

The problem with self hosting is .... where are the buyers?  The point of giving away a large chunk of sales to the agencies is because they have the buyers.

Same reason when I sell via my Amazon account they nab 15%.  Because they bring the buyers.
