Title: Is the RM expiration date handled by websites?
Post by: Petr Toman on March 24, 2016, 09:53
I always wondered if the "News" websites when buying non perpetual RM license are actually removing images after the expiration date?

Example :
On Alamy I sold RM image with End date: 01 January 2021
The Country: Germany
Usage: Editorial
Media: Editorial website

I doubt that in the modern times they actually have a system to track this, in the quantity of images they use every day.

Is here anyone with real experience?

Thanks a ton

Alamy don't  always track the number of times a single article sale is used, so I'd be surprised if they track dates. On a few occasions when I've  questioned dates used which were not according to the RM licence as reported, they replied that the nature of the business makes accurate dates impossible (but didn't explain why).

I can tell you from experience on both sides of the equation the answer is definitely no. Not well tracked and usually only taken down by direct request. in print days it was so much simpler ....

I think RM license date tracking is difficult. In many cases it can be confusing. Does a publisher have the right to print 50,000 books or does the license expire in 2 years? For a lot of usages it's much easier to simply apply a "by the project" pricing. Worldwide versus regional also just confuses pricing.
