New on this site.. Mom takes pictures... amateur. I am on model mayhem #2972349
Noticed an old thread that stated the girl next door is good for stock shots.. Well that's me..
Noticed an old thread from 2008 and thought I'd try to answer.. but this site wants me to start a new thread.

As for paying models.  Yeah we like to be paid.. period.. so does photographers.  food and cars and housing is nice..  I do TFPs but not much.. Don't really see the need to do the crotch shot. Going to try to do a nice high end glam-our with some skin but not much.. working up to it.. Picking the right photographer is most important.

Ok it's a total ad right now.. lol.. but I am in LA and am trying to get some work so I can buy a car...
I would love to get some basic magazine or catalog work.. anyone out there in LA area that does this..

Hey cdwheatley..if you weren't in Australia..i'd love to shoot with you...but not everything works out..

I've used three models found on ModelMayhem here in Australia, but rejected many more for stock work.

Here's an important tip (for stock photography): pay particular attention to those models who say they will NOT do nude under any circumstances.

I agree, the girl next door type has a much broader appeal for stock work. I'm having a hard time finding the right type at this point.

I would love to get some basic magazine or catalog work.. anyone out there in LA area that does this..

Well, there you go.
I'm desperate for models and I'd pay, but I was in LA last Friday and now I'm back in Scotland ... ???

nice look. you might want to contact some agencies for contract work. MM is full of horney guys with DSLRs who call themselves photographers. be cautious. bring escorts

Also find some pro models to spell out the biz. it is not as glamorous as  you might think. Whiten teeth, learn about  your make up and hair. A pro model does not need alot of instructions and delivers with confidence. it takes practice in the mirror and knowing how your body moves best.

it takes time and you can make it work if you want it. Good luck

Very little stock photography has high fashion in it. Unless you are a absolute natural in front of the camera, you will need training either by the photographer or a experienced model.

Many years I shot fashion and beauty. Every model in the beginning of their carreers either paid or did tfp work. And many of the well known faces did test shots that were close to or were fine art. No pay was ever considered. Now everyone expects pay with little or no experience and usually they are no longer repped by a agency.

I looked at your portfolio on MM, whittle down the photographs,  just choose a one or two from every shoot. Better to have a few great  photographs than a bunch of so so photographs. What you are really missing now is a good headshot

I would agree with that, and am quite surprised that - despite the cliche - young girls still fall for it. I actually use my "40 something mum" credentials with pride on MM. :)  Having said that, the few times I've used it the models have been either too young (one turned up with braces on her teeth!) or just flaky. I'm not into fashion so much, nor tattoos or zombie "art"....

A little while ago we had another photographer come on this site and try to advertise his e-book and lessons for a profit. We asked him to participate in the discussions and now he has seemed to have disappeared from this site.

It is not proper etiquette to come to a site as a new user and try to make money of its members. If you are willing to work on a concept with some photographers for a series of photographs and not be paid we are all listening

I want a model to hire me without having seen any professional work produced by me and pay me enough to buy a new car in exchange for shooting some portfolio shots for her.   ::)

I have used a lot of models over the years from ModelMayhem and have found some wonderful people to collaborate with.

I have never, nor will I EVER pay a model the first time we work together, simply because you never know how it will go.  It takes  more than a pretty face and a DSLR to produce commercially viable shots.  I have however always compensated them for travel and also treated them to lunch when it's been a long shoot (after all it is simply deductible expenses for a photographer)

My advice to you is two part:

1) Find a talented photographer in your area that has a portfolio of commercially viable images of models with their clothes ON, ask if they will help you with a TFP session in exchange for you shooting one or two of their concepts  for them (trade for trade is only fair)

2) Use only commercially viable images on your portfolio (not all us photographers are looking for skin and ass shots) - Once your portfolio is all nice clean well edited shots (you only need 10-12) email every PROFESSIONAL (put in capitals as professional photographers get paid to do a job and make their living from it) photographer in your area with a polite introduction, a few proof shots and a link to your MM portfolio and see what happens.

LA is full of talented photographers and pervs alike, YOU need to put in the work to sort the wheat from the chaff.

Develop a professional attitude, treat your industry contacts professionally and sooner or later they will start to treat you as a professional.

I wish you the best of luck with your future but seriously don't be expecting to get paid enough to buy a car from a shoot or two.  ;)

Again I am reading all your comments with great interest.
Today I had my first paid gig..
Hair and makeup only. So upscale head shots
It was fun.. Up at 5:30 am.. drive 45 minutes.. arrive on time...
Get make up on.. shoot,  get more make up on.. shoot.. get more make up on..shoot
The photographer .. a young man named Alex Owen did the shoot and Dinandrea Vega was paying.. It was her "gig" ..
I think it went well.  They all told me they were happy
Hope to have a few pictures for my MM site by end of week.
I hope they rate me or make nice comments as I agree that this is a profession..no one wants to be kept waiting.. we all want to be paid.. if possible..
Finally.. I would really like someone to pay me enough to buy the car too.. lol..  yep .. in our dreams but I am trying to get some basic work.. braces come off in June.. yeah.. summer will be more available..
Is there anything I can help with .. contact me .. preferably through MM site as that is the site I check the most.  Looking forward to maybe working with some of the great photographers on this site someday.

Being a minor will work against you for a while, it's always easier to work with adults.

What kind of model do you want to be? Keep in mind that a lot of agencies really hate or even prohibit their models from doing stock shoots. YOU are a BRAND. Do you want to loose control of your brand? That's what you risk doing when you pose for stock photography and it's why most of my models are not models. Just people I find and then coach.
