Need Help With Bulk Renaming Files

Hi All,  :D

Is there a good file renaming program out there that is free and easy to use?

I am just wondering because here is a problem I am encountering:

I can rename files with Windows but it names everything as photo (1), photo (2), photo (3) etc...

However.. when I want to rename these files... I tried using a program called "Bulk Rename Utility" and it sorts the files as photo (1), photo (10), photo (11), photo (2) photo (20) photo (21)... which throws everything out of order. I want the photos to be in numerical sequence as these are time lapse images.

Can anyone help?

I would really appreciate any advice you have.

I use NameChanger - it's free, provides lots of flexibility and works great.  It might be only for Macs though - not sure about that part.

File Renamer Basic, I think its freeware. Works great and fast.

Which image processing software are you using? There is a bulk renamer in some of these, you might just need pointing in the right direction.

Yup, I do all my renaming in Bridge. Not free though.

My friend wrote me a script for exact same reason, it works and it saved me a lot of time.

It basically works in the way that u put your images in a same folder where the script is, run the script and it will put sequence numbers in front of the original name
of your file. You just type number od digits and first number. It does it randomly so when i have few batches to rename it mixes images randomly.

If you are interested just PM me I can mail it to you but if you want it to work you will have to install python 2.7.8 from here first

Its the best free solution I have found.

Thanks for all your help! 

I did some more research this evening and actually found a program that does exactly what I want and it doesn't process the files out of sequence either... such as...  photo (1), photo (10), photo (11), photo (12)... photo (2), photo (20), photo (21), photo (22). 

This program processes them in numerical sequence... which is they way they should be, IMHO.

Anyway the program I use is called Advanced Renamer.

It processed the files in numeral order Photo (1),  Photo (2),  Photo (3),  Photo (4),  Photo (5),  Photo (6),  Photo (7),  Photo (8),  Photo (9),  Photo (10) and spit them out as 0001, 0002, 0003... etc, etc... exactly the way I wanted!  :D 

BTW... I had to try several bulk renaming programs to find one that processed them sequentially... the others wanted to process them in that rather asinine number order thing.

Irfanview does it also and free. Unless I missed what you were trying to do with the names?

Also... renaming, start with photo "0001" instead of "1" and you may have your solution.

It will sort in the right order, instead of the Windows way with 1,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,2,20...

For Mac there's Automator, but I'm not sure about Windows. Adobe Bridge works well if you have it.

Suggestions are welcome and helped me a lot with similar requirement. Well I also found BatchRenameFiles Tool is a goof option. Thanks

You can also rename files in Lightroom if you use it - both as you import and subsequently using the rename function. Another way to get around the 1...10 issue in any renaming software is to start with 001.
