Title: Should I sell similar images on Getty, iStock and Shutterstock
Post by: mgphoto on April 09, 2014, 17:38
Hello.

Im currently selling my Pictures RF on 3 Stock platforms Getty (Moment, Moment Open), iStock and Shutterstock. Currently I have my best images only on Getty and the rest on iStock and also on Shutter. Shutterstock is currently my cash cow.

Im thinking about including my best pictures also to iStock and Shutter because my sales on Getty are very low. What are your experience of selling the same pictures on different platforms? Is this useful in therms of generating more money (one day I want to live from it)? Im shooting travel and nature.

Markus

you are not allowed to do that! Read your Getty contract your images including similars or same session are exclusive to Getty!

I can't comment specifically on selling on different platforms, as I'm really not doing that myself yet. But consider the direction a lot of people are going in this business; A lot of folks (myself included) are looking into ways to diversify beyond microstock due to the growing instability of microstock, difficulties in maintaining (or growing) earnings, licensing and distribution issues (think partner programs and API deals), constant pressure from agencies to accept less and less money per sale, etc.

Personally I'm not confident that I'll be able to make a living just with microstock for much longer, so I'm looking to expand into other things. Not many people go the other way, getting more invested in microstock. Most people look for an "out", a way to branch out into other ventures, other ways of making money from images, etc.

Getty may not be working for you, but I'm not sure I'd take all of those images out of Getty and put them into microstock. If that's your premium stuff, you may want to look for a more middle-ground way of distributing them. Stocksy and Offset come to mind.

Thank you for the answers. I just found the point in the Getty agreements which deny to sell the pictures with another third party agency.

You agree:
Only Getty Images may license the images and Similars (defined in the Agreement and FAQ) you place with us while the Agreement is in effect (Getty Images will have exclusive licensing rights).

Im still thinking about taking them out from Getty and move them to Shutterstock.

You can't remove images from Getty.  Ever.  Until you quit.

I thought after 2 years you can remove the images by giving them a note.
Is this not possible?

Ask them, but I have always been told that it is not possible to remove single images. You must quit the contract.

But if they do let you remove individual files, please let us know, I am sure many people would like to remove some pictures, especially if they have stopped selling.

So if a contributor goes non-exclusive on istock or they going non-exclusive on Getty also? Or do they have to inform istock they want their images back from Getty?

That is a different thing. If you go indie your files on Getty will be removed. But the OP has a direct contract with getty that is independent from istock.

Many people are indie but have a house contract with getty. then only the content they send to getty is exclusive.

Itīs the main reason i donīt understand why istock doesnīt offer a third path for exclusive images/exclusive series. This is what Getty is practising anyway.

getty itself does not have an artist exclusive contract, only image exclusivity.

Guess I am the opposite there, getting most of my income from Getty.. but just recently started with other microstock sites. I do know, however, that anything you post on Getty, CANNOT be sold anywhere else. You can sell prints, but not the files for commercial use.

Iīm a hobby photograph and deliver since 8 month different microstock agencies. In my opinon it make sence to deliver multiple agencies as semo pro, but when I doing pictures as main job than I would have a problem because the earnings are really small. I make only landscape pictures and I know the topic is important. I think itīs possible to earn much more with people images, but than you have more costs! Finallay: It depends on what you are doing.

Hint: When you plan to contibure your images to multiple agencies you can use mymicrostockupload.com. Then you have always the overview and can manage in less time your pictures.
