Title: Why can't I submit to iStock???
Post by: blaspheemer on September 09, 2012, 19:09
Recently I submitted to iStock as a contributor for the vector section. I uploaded my first 3 designs and was rejected 3 times. The last time I cannot find out what the problem is. The "reason" was I didn't add an Adobe Illustrator .eps 10.0 file in the zip folder...but I did save the file as an Adobe Illustrator .eps 10.0... What went wrong? I did have transparencies that I flattened but were converted to gradient vector pieces, not rasterizations. I don't get it. It's been months of waiting and waiting and now the time doubles...more and more...blahblah blahhhhhh. What the heck is the prob?!?!?!? I opened the files in a text editing program and everywhere it says Illustrator 15.1. I don't see 10.0 ANYWHERE! So, maybe these files are not 10.0?... I did save them that way... What do I do do my next submission is accepted and I don't have to wait 30 days, which will be the next wait time if rejected again. What should I do???

Post on the iStock illustration forum?
http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_threads.php?forumid=65&page=1 (http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_threads.php?forumid=65&page=1)
Hopefully someone there will be able to help.
There are also some illustrators here who might be able to help too, but that forum is only for illustrators. Presumably you can get all sorts of info by reading it regularly.

I know about their forums but I cannot participate because I have not been accepted yet... That's part of the conundrum... I submitted a ticket for help but it seems they don't have an answer, which is strange because they are the ones who rejected me. I guess a different department though.

I think that this the problem. From CS5 (I think - I skipped CS4) version of AI - it doesn't show "AI10" in script even though vectors really are EPS10. When I've bought CS5 when it was just released - SS started refusing my vectors. It was a loooong discussion, I had to swear that they really are EPS10, I installed old Illustrator 10 application to check that vectors are really ok.... I convinced one reviewer about my truth and other rejected my batch next time.
So I think that problem is in iStock's approval procedure. They probably open vectors in some kind of text or script editor as you did and when they see "AI11EPS" instead of AI10 they reject it. As iS is new in "EPS10 business", they probably don't know about this "bug".

You could also try twitter or facebook, they seem to be more responsive there.

Try this. Open the eps in a text editor. Search for the actually file name e.g. filename.eps  That should be written twice in the document, once at the top and once near the bottom. The one near the bottom will also state the eps version nearby.

I don't think so. I have no idea what all these letters mean but saved to EPS10 it looks like:

%%Creator: Adobe Illustrator(R) 15.1
.
.
%ADOBeginClientInjection: DocumentHeader "AI11EPS"
%%AI8_CreatorVersion: 15.1.0
.
.
.
.
%ADOBeginClientInjection: EndPageContent "AI11EPS"
userdict /annotatepage 2 copy known {get exec}{pop pop} ifelse
%ADOEndClientInjection: EndPageContent "AI11EPS"
grestore
grestore
pgrs
%%PageTrailer
%ADOBeginClientInjection: PageTrailer Start "AI11EPS"
[/EMC AI11_PDFMark5
[/NamespacePop AI11_PDFMark5
%ADOEndClientInjection: PageTrailer Start "AI11EPS"

But saved to EPS8 it works as expected:
%%Creator: Adobe Illustrator(R) 8.0
%%AI8_CreatorVersion: 15.1.0

It's same in CS6. "AI11EPS" was reason why Shutterstock used to reject my vectors. I even tried to change "11" to "10" and save in script editor but it worked only for very few files. Some of them were not possible to open by Illustrator10 after this change.

You won't get any help by opening a ticket.

Thy must have changed their modus operandi - it used to be that once you had applied you could use the forums, and it was encouraged to use the critique forum exactly for this purpose. Indeed, there was such a thread (a photographer) over the last couple of weeks.

Maybe take a ticket out to ask about why you can't post on the forums? Or does someone here know?

Or are somehow only allowed access to the critique forum?
Or has it been mucked up with last week's 'upgrade'?

I can't see the file name in your quote?. When I looked at mine it was just below the text you quoted and includes the version (10) as shown below.

%%Creator: Adobe Illustrator(R) 10.0
%%AI8_CreatorVersion: 15.0.0
%%For: (Administrator) ()
%%Title: (filename.eps)

yeah its confusing  ???

are you using a mac?  If so, then you can get the info by right or control clicking the file's icon. Apparently that gives the version it was saved to and the version it was created in. Can't do it on a PC.

I know, I have no problems with it (as well as Corel users). But SS reviewers had problem with it and it seems that at iS they still have. I have no personal experience - I haven't uploaded any eps10 to iS yet. I tried to discuss this issue with Adobe Support - with no concrete result.

I think if you buy just one file on istock you can see and use the forums.

Good luck!

I am using a Mac and the version of Illustrator CS5 I have is a Student/Teacher edition. I don't know if that makes a difference.

2/3 the way down in the text editor it does show the version as 10.0 and also when I check the Get Info section from the icon:
"%!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0
%%Creator: Adobe Illustrator(R) 10.0
%%AI8_CreatorVersion: 15.1.0"

I was going to alter the files in the text editor. I did and the file opened ok in Illsutrator but now it won't work for some reason. The file is not locked and it says I have access to write but I can Save A Version. I wouldn't know what to alter anyway. Where it says 15.1.0 or all the AI11.eps?

I don't get it. What should I do? Should I just try uploading again? ... I really don't know what to do now....

You're right I have "10.0" in script as well, probably I never checked whole script. It has nothing to do with Student Edition - I have both 5.0 and 6.0 full versions and it's same. I read somewhere that this is only Mac's problem but I'm not sure. I used to change AI11 to AI10 but some of vectors were not editable in AdobeIllustrator10 anymore (I didn't find any pattern which ones).

I still think that reviewer (or utility they use) checks only header or beginning of script/document. As I wrote I had this problem only with SS (when CS5 was new), can't say about iS - I haven't uploaded any eps10 there yet.

I'm afraid that all you can do is to write to support, send them screenshots and explain that these files are really eps10 and that it is not your mistake but Adobe's bug/feature. I spent days discussing this issue both with Adobe and SS support, I took old G4 with AI10 software out of garage to test it but I didn't find anything that I could change myself.
