Title: D200 - Strange lines since Nikon clean
Post by: Phadrea on July 20, 2015, 04:51
Ok, I have only just found this after a days shoot since Nikon re-cleaned my D200. I have found strange horizontal lines when zooming right in in a pattern when shooting vertical and vertical when shooting horizontal.

What could this be considering I now have a clean sensor and shot at 100 iso? Tried both lenses and the same pattern so def the camera.

Don't know what it is, but I would complain to Nikon and have them take care of it.

I have and they have not responded. They are good at that.

Wow, it looks like you're shooting a canvas print! Are you perhaps using a circular polarizer? The reason I ask is because it looks to me like the texture is not on a true horizontal and vertical axis. If it was a bayer issue then I'd expect to see horizontal and vertical lines running at perfect 90 degree angles. Other than that I have no idea either other than a misaligned sensor. That sucks!

I used no filter at all. You wouldn't have believed that Nikon would screw up a simple sensor clean twice, possibly screwing up the camera for life. And to think I could have bought the kit and done a decent job myself at home.

it looks like moire, like they left the low pass filter off.... but I don't understand how you would see that on the sky. It is a picture taken of the actual sky (not a sky that was displayed on a screen or magazine print?)

Almost looks like the impression of a cleaning pad.  Did they start and get distracted?

At first Nikon came back to me saying it will be a processing error, nothing to do with the clean. They soon changed their mind when I sent them the actual RAW file. They then asked me for a RAW file from before the clean with no marks as proof this indeed did happen since the clean. All images taken after the clean have this marking.

I must admit my faith in Nikon to service my possible future cameras is very low. It clearly shows they do not check the camera after the clean and this has now happened twice. The first time they left a dirty great black spot on the sensor you could see from across the road.

I have a case right now with the Federal Trade Commission regarding Nikon. I have had so many problems with their products and this last $5700 lens purchase was it. Brand new lens and I have had it in twice since May. They have done extensive parts replacements both times, each not solving the issue of not focusing at infinity. This is one of their flagship lens's, 300 2.8 VR.  Per the FTC I have submitted a formal request to their New York office for a fully tested replacement lens or a refund, since my 30-day return to B&H is gone. Their customer service is horrible, they block the customer from anything other than a call center, who is very UNHELPFUL and UNKNOWLEDGEABLE.

Mantis, do you qualify for the NPS program?  I had problems with a new body - well, 2 new 810 bodies that blanked out.  It wound up being a bent pin in the grip.  But I was in Mexico in May to shoot a wedding and was not happy when I took my brand new replacement body out of the bag and it didn't work.  It really helps that I have a relationship with my dealer, they went miles out of their way to help me (I process with them so I pick up prints a couple times a week, everyone knows me by name)

When the manager was speaking with the Nikon rep, something came up that I had no idea existed.  Here is a link to a Nikon pro program in Canada.  I assume they have it in other countries as well but you will have to dig for it.  You may qualify.  It is free for Nikon, and they said Canon has a similar program but there is a fee.

https://help.nikon.ca/app/answers/detail/a_id/8133/~/nps-membership-in-canada (https://help.nikon.ca/app/answers/detail/a_id/8133/~/nps-membership-in-canada)

I have 12 items on the list but only one body that qualifies :(

edit:  realize that link is a little vague, but this is from my dealer's email . He did mention that if you were part of NPS (Nikon Professional Services) Nikon has many benefits, including 72hr service turnaround*, and access to the Nikon loaner pool*. If you’re not part of NPS, it’s not much good mentioning, but something to consider in the future, depending what you have. I’ll attach the link, since there’s no cost either. I’m not sure how quickly they’d be able to process the application either.

B and H only give you 30 days on a lens that expensive ? We have better guarantees in the UK by far then. Usually 12 months standard.

I was thinking of a D750 or 810 as my next purchase but I am beginning to think again. Might go with Sony. Oh wait, just remembered,  I had to send back 2 copies of their RX10 in the last 12 months as being duff models.

Yes, but remember, that's "consumer rights" and guarantees. Business user "rights" are slightly different. [/size](You do make money from your photography?)

They are having to admit that the lines indeed have started appearing since the sensor clean but they think it highly unlikely that it will have caused it. They want me to send it back to them but my confidence in Nikon is very low at the moment. Is it worth sending in ? They could find some excuse as to how it isn't their fault and possibly bill me.

I was thinking of getting a D750 or 810 but as the service is pretty por it almost makes me want to boycot them.

I agree. Have a look at some of the stuff online about removing the AA (anti aliasing) filter on your camera. Apparently the D200 gives some banding when this is done. http://www.maxmax.com/nikon_d200hr.htm (http://www.maxmax.com/nikon_d200hr.htm)
I think if it was me, I'd try for them looking at what the fault is for no charge as it was right before it went in.
FWIW I'm not a big fan of repair services, whoever they are run by, as unless it really is a local bloke you know doing it, you have no way of knowing the conditions in which work is done, or the quality of the techs there.

It seems I overlooked this little bag with a sensor inside when I last had the camera back from them. Why didn't Nikon have any notes about this instead of scratching their heads as to what it could be  ? My faith in Nikon continues to dwindle.

Maybe reloading the  firmware..... ???

Can you believe they still have my camera and the status still reads "awaiting repair - estimated repair date 11th August" I get no communication from them except patchy email replies. How can I have any faith in Nikon repairing any future camera I may buy like a D810 ?

the D200 is ten years old I wouldn't bother with repairing on such an old digital camera it's truly not worth it.

I didnt send it in for a repair, it went in for a clean and came back damaged. They have an obligation to repair the damage despite it's age.
