Title: Nikon RAW problem.Urgent help please!!
Post by: kiratsinhjadeja on December 09, 2011, 09:22
Hello,

Please help me!I am facing a very bad problem.I shot a photo in RAW with my NIKON D5100.But it turns out that it is corrupt!I sooo wanted to upload it on the sites.

But the problem is very weird.

- The preview shows the complete file, so that does mean that data is present other wise it couldn't be read at the 1st place.

Here -

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/42878955/CC.JPG (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/42878955/CC.JPG)

- But when I try to edit it with capture NX or within the view NX itself, I get this -

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/42878955/CC2.JPG (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/42878955/CC2.JPG)

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/42878955/CC4.JPG (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/42878955/CC4.JPG)

- And when I try opening it with PS, I get this -

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/42878955/CC3.JPG (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/42878955/CC3.JPG)

I so wanted to upload this as an editorial. It is 1 of those shots that I feel is unique.I don’t have similars because it was those fraction of seconds where this guy gave this look before engaging with other tourists for group photos.I shot it at a time when other tourists left, and others were coming to him for some clicks.

PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO FIX THIS?I tried transferring the file on both 32 and 64 bits system.BUT SAME PROBLEM PERSISTS.

I can crop but it will look weird and more over I wanted to make some edits in the RAW editing softwares.

If I can see the whole image in the preview, that DOES MEAN THAT THE DATA IS PRESENT.HOW CAN I RECOVER IT AND FIX IT?

Yes, I STILL HAVE KEPT THE FILE IN THE MEMORY CARD JUST IN CASE I GET THE SOLUTION AND HAVE TO TRANSFER AGAIN.I TRANSFERRED USING THE USB PROVIDED WITH THE CAMERA.ALREADY CONTACTED NIKON SUPPORT BUT IN TURN THEY ASKED ME TO CONTACT THE LOCAL SUPPORT AND IN INDIA THERE IS NOTHING LIKE SUPPORT.TRUST ME.THE ANSWER I WOULD GET IS SORRY NOTHING CAN BE DONE.

So please help me…..Please..

Make sure you've upgraded to the latest software versions of photoshop and / or NX. That usually does the trick. A workaround is exporting the nef file to dng using Lightroom, but you'll need the latest version of Lr too. It's the ACR 6,4 or above version that matters.

I would transfer again in case something went wrong there. Maybe the camera was low on battery during transfer.

If that doesn't work try duplicating the photo in camera in some way, there are filter options which do not delete the original but make copies with the filter, maybe this works.

For example use the trim effect which crops your image this will not crop the original but it makes a duplicate in your memory card with the cropped version.

Also check the memory card, it might be faulty. I don't think you can recover this image, you got the first case right because it's the embedded jpeg from NEF file.

Agreed here

hi, try to put the card in your camera..and view it with your camera..if your camera can recognise the file and have a perfect preview then try to generate a high resolution jpg using the camera.

Its a case of a corrupt file or card. I dont think you will be able to recover it. Have had the same problem myself.

As some others mentioned before, it looks like the RAW data is corrupt, even though the jpeg preview is okay.  The jpeg preview is also what your camera uses to show a preview of the photo on the back of your camera.  So that explains why it looks okay on camera.  Do you shoot just RAW, or do you let your camera save a small / medium / large jpeg along with the RAW version of the image?

I'm a Canon user and don't know what Nikon's options are.  But I would expect them to offer similar functionality.  If you chose that option, you might still have a decent jpeg file?

I've had this problem too in the early day working with Nikon.
Got around it :
- copy the file directly from card to hard drive (2x) (direct connection usb camera/computer) use copy paste in windows brower
- open in photoshop or nikon view
- if okay convert to tiff, iff okay save as 16 bit tiff and then continue to photoshop raw convertor.

Hope this helps.

This might be due to the severe corruption of the NEF image file. Try using reliable  nef file format recovery tool (http://www.digitalphotorecovery.org/nef-file-format-of-nikon.html) that recovers deleted or lost data. You can preview recovered data prior to restoration when you download (http://www.remosoftware.com/remo-recover-windows.exe) demo version of the tool and estimate recovery chances of the tool.
