Just got myself a great deal on a dell studio xps from dell outlet thanks to a 15% off coupon.

The basic stats:
Processor:
Studio XPS 435 Desktop: Intel Core i7-920 Processor (8MB L3 Cache, 1MB L2 Cache, 2.66GHz)
Hard Drive:
640 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
640 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM) 2nd drive
RAM:
8 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1066MHz (6 DIMMs)
Video Card:
512MB ATI Radeon HD 4850

for.............. $985.82

Just gotta throw in the 24" Dell S2409W monitor for $250.

It is missing two things that I wanted though -- wireless and the 19 in 1 memory card reader. But on dell outlet you can't be too fussy. Dell Outlet = returned/refurbished systems marked down significantly. All the reviews and comments are positive and they still come with the warranty.

This setup costs about $1750 to buy new from Dell.

That IS a great deal Kngkyle! Congrats! Makes me want to upgrade my PC although that is not happening any time soon.

Ebay can also be a great place to get those. I got a great deal on Ebay for a Dell desktop a long time ago.

1 - Make sure you get a 64-bit OS with that (preferably XP - Vista is a memory-eater) since 32-bit OSs can't really address memory beyond 2-3 Gig.

2 - Resist the temptation to keep your images on the large system disk, since system disks can get corrupted easily. I had it twice in 3 years. The last time I was so wise to keep all my data on the second disk so it was easy to recover them after reformatting my system disk.

If I had that machine, I would probably make photos just like I am doing them now with this machine I already have

I mean, maybe that monitor would help me a bit...but again...the rolls royce is not for a tractor driver. For me with this workflow and this tempo of 5-10 images per week, it's the same as some cheap machine $:-\$
