Title: Amazing color photos taken 100 years ago!
Post by: jareso on August 24, 2010, 06:53
Today surfing the net, I came to this article about one photographer, that made about 1900+ color shots of the Russian Empire about 100! years ago. He used technique of combining 3 separate BW plates, shooting these 3 expositions at short time interval with plates filtered by red, green and blue filter.

Article with some photos:

I am amazed when looking at these quality, beautiful and high dynamic color images that were photographed 100! years ago … really amazing – it is like using time-machine … I feel like in a dream :) when I am looking at this old-time color images of forgotten places and people. They look like they were photographed just some minutes ago ...

Very interesting, so I thought I will share it with you …

Inventing - or at least using practically - RGB a century ago, while everybody else was struggling with colour films with lesser results: he's a genius.

Absolutely wonderful work. I have some old photo's from my grand-parents era, 80 or 90 years ago, and I find portrait posing is almost the same in each of them, no smiling or very little. This seems to be the norm back then, even for snapshots, or they just had nothing to smile about.

Just amazing... they've finally proved that the past wasn't lived in black and white (as I had believed as a child).

It's amazing how seeing the past in colour somehow bridges the gap between us and people from earlier times.  Looking at those had quite a deep psychological and emotional impact on me.  I wonder if the technique was simply too expensive and/or specialised to be used more widely and quickly?

Thanks so much for sharing them.

First photo: The guy with the red moustache laying on the ground looks a little seasick :)

Or maybe it´s the russian vodka...

Great, thanks for posting.  The few places where the technique brakes down is where there is greater movement . . .  like in the river. . . . .  most interesting!

Yes, given the technique I was surprised that the people were able to stay that still for three shots.
