Title: Apple Tablet Announcement *TODAY*
Post by: leaf on January 27, 2010, 05:56
So is anyone else following this?

The announcement is coming later today so all the rumors will be put to rest.  I saw a pictures this morning which claims to be the real thing (attached).  It was a bit dark so I took it into curves in Photoshop.  It looks like it has some sort of hard plastic casing around it, perhaps so people can't see the true shape, or to protect one of the few prototypes.

They will probably sell a ton of them, but for me personally, I'd take a laptop with a keyboard any day over a tablet.

My wife wants a backlit book reader bigger than her phone, so maybe this is it.

I'll be following this as I work today... probably not being very productive in the process.  Everyone should watch Leo LaPorte at http://live.twit.tv/... (http://live.twit.tv/...) He said he'll be covering it live for about 5 hours straight.  Of course, this is only if you're an Apple freak, which I'm guessing many in this forum are.

Myself, I'm excited but also a bit skeptical.  If the device is what everyone is speculating, I imagine it will make us Apple fans line up and sales will be great for the first few weeks, but it ultimately won't necessarily change the world, which for Apple would make it a flop.  But the Steve has created magic before, and he very well may do it again!

yeah, i saw that site this morning.  Are they going to have live coverage or just doing an audio commentary on what is happening?

I plan to follow it on Gizmodo, unless twit.tv has live video coverage

You should follow Gizmodo AND watch Leo.  Leo and crew will undoubtedly be reading Gizmodo and other sites right along with you, and they'll be commenting on each new tidbit as the sites post them.  I watched the last few Apple announcements this way, and it feels like you're experiencing the whole thing with a group of friends reacting around you rather than reading it alone in a vacuum.

It should be interesting. I'm hoping it is some sort of iTunes for print (books, magazines, etc.). I think that would open up a lot of creative jobs if successful.

I like the prototype I saw of a laptop that uses its screen as a detachable tablet.  Hopefully that will be produced.

Yeah, i really think it could.

'indie' comic illustrators could really have a market for their content.  I guess people can read underground comics on the net too but having a device like the ipod is for music, specifically for print media would make a significant difference.  The iPhone has really opened up a huge market for individual programmers - something that I think is very cool.  Any old joe can create software and make it available to the world.  If it catches on, the programmer can earn very well from it.

HOLY CRAP!

Pretty amazing device, starting at just $499 with a dirt-cheap data plan?

Forget what I said about this being a potential flop.  This is a game-changer.

From the BBC news;

"Apple revealed that more than 3bn apps have been downloaded from its App store."

Three BILLION! Makes microstock sales volume seem pretty insignificant.

I actually looked into what it would take to build an iPhone app, and quickly realized I wouldn't have the stomach for it.

An app developer has no way of knowing until the app is submitted to Apple to review whether it will be approved and allowed into the store.

Think of it in terms of microstock... you spend an entire year perfecting an image you feel is a masterpiece... you submit it to the microstock agency (assume there's only one), and it is rejected with little or no explanation.  I don't think I could deal with that kind of uncertainty.  I give big kudos to developers who can work under terms like that and be a success at it.  The successful ones deserve every dollar they make.  (And don't forget there are many more who aren't successful... like microstock, the App Store has quickly become flooded and unless your app is best in class, it may never get noticed and bought.)

I'm no expert but a radio report I was half-listening to yesterday reckoned that there are thousands of developers in places like China and India that are churning app's out at the rate of several a day. They talked about them knocking up simple app's in their lunch hour.

Looks great, $499 is a great price for intro level machine. Should make all these ereader companies nervous.

Looks nice. Price isn't as extreme as I expected. But I still don't see how it can beat a regular laptop. Not having an actual keyboard is a deal killer for me. I'm sure they will sell tons though.

Also 'iPad' is kind of a silly name and can be thought of in a not so elegant way.

I'll be ordering one for my wife... the low end one, wireless with no data plan.  Our old iBook laptop is just about dead, so $500 to replace it, since it's perfect for light browsing and email which is all she does... that's a no-brainer.  I've entered my email to be notified when Apple is ready to take pre-orders.  If you're even thinking about getting one, I think you'll want to put a pre-order in as soon as you can.

@Kngkyle and Tom you know you want one. ;)

Watching the the video on the Apple website brought tears to my eyes!
I'll probably buy one. Been thinking about an ereader for awhile and this will be perfect.

An LED monitor came with my new Mac Pro. Absolutely STUNNING quality. Made my LCD HD Cinema Display look like crap.

Um, PowerDroid - why would you say this is "perfect for email"?   Am I the only one who noticed that it doesn't have a keyboard?   Sure you can peck out email with one finger - but is that what we now call "perfect"?

Ok I see now it's big, but it's just a virtual keyboard that overlays whatever you're looking at on the display, right?  I don't think I'd like typing on a sheet of glass.  Just me I guess.

I'm a developer too and I think a lot of guys must be losing their @sses on this deal.  They'll spend a huge amount of time that will never pay off in sales at $5, even worse if Apple decides they don't like it.  Microstock is bad enough, but you'd spend weeks on an iPhone app that had even a chance of success.

Cute shop job.

Af for the stock going down today... You obviously don't spend much time following Wall street.
'Buy on the rumor, sell on the news' is a very common ploy.

AAPL would have gone down today even if they had announced that the device did your laundry, brought you b'fast in bed and only cost $250.00

I've been an investor in Apple for quite some time and have followed the events leading up to today closely.

http://images.huffingtonpost.com/gadgets/slideshows/2968/slide_2968_41866_large.jpg (http://images.huffingtonpost.com/gadgets/slideshows/2968/slide_2968_41866_large.jpg)

Here's what I've heard from what was shown on CNBC today:

*HD Video?
*iPhone operating system
*All existing iPhone applications will work on this
*16 to 64 Gigs of memory at each pricing level
*1 Gighz Chip owned by Apple
*10 hours of battery life (pretty amazing for touch screen I would imagine if true)
*Stripped down base unit $499 (w/o WiFi and other capabilities)
*16 GiG w/WiFi $626 32 Gig w/WiFi $749 64 Gig w/ WiFi $829 with unlimited data plans and service from AT&T for $29.99 month w/o any contract required

On a final note being a marketing and research guy I was speculating as to what Apple would call it and I ascertained the following: iTablet, iPad, iNetBook were most likely.  When iPad popped into my head I quickly thought that the Night talk show hosts would have a "hay day" with this one  ::)

From a marketing perspective, imho, the roll-out was a smashing success. Buzz was generated, and while the stock had sold off on the immediate roll-out it "Buy the rumor ... sell the news", it popped up 10 points as soon as the "knock-the-ball-out-of-the-park" pricing was unveiled. The glass shattering sound bite was a nice touch. Prior to that there was much speculation that such a device could not cost any less than $1000.

Apple continues to trade just off its 52 wk and all time high. They just reported over 15 Billion in Revenue ... for the quarter for an all time record for them.

Whether you like it, love it, hate the name or just don't care ... this is a game changing device.

It will be interesting to see how the Apple stock prevails over the next couple of months.

It's smaller, lighter, has a touch screen interface and much longer battery life.  Whether any of that's essential is a personal decision.  I'm curious to see what happens when developers start producing apps specifically for the iPad.  Could be interesting.

Maybe that's what is leaving me unconvinced right now. Without software developed specifically for this thing, it's nothing more than a giant iPod.

Show me some software that makes this more than an iPod, and I might change my tune. Until then, I don't see how this would benefit me any more than my iPhone already does.

Who doesn't want an iPhone with a bigger screen?  The main reason I don't read ebooks on my iPhone is the screen size.  And to the person who referred to 3G as WiFi, you have your terminology confused.  The lower models have your standard WiFi modems, the more expensive models have cellular 3G modems in them in addition to WiFi.

This thing will be great for watching movies on the go, or catching up on news, email, etc without having to drag a full computer around with you.  iPhones are good for that but you are locked into their carrier, iPads are unlocked, and have a bigger screen making it easier to use without hunching over your iPhone like Golem...my.....PREcious!

You mean like the word processor and spreadsheet Apple showed at the launch?  That's a pretty interesting start for a product that's 60 days away.

A word processor, with no actual keyboard. Yawn.

A bigger IPhone, without the phone.  Sigh.

A netbook that lays flat on the table with the display pointing straight up.  Um....

Every touchpad/tablet device ever introduced since the dawn of time has bombed  - until the iPhone. People will put up with the inconvenience of touch-screen entry because of the pocket size.

This is a price-y gadget for reading stuff and watching videos, not for anything that I'd call "working with a computer".  Ok, I can sit in an arm chair and read the news, somewhat easier than with a netbook.  I guess that's pretty cool, but for $500 I can wait.

I think this device is meant to be used in the hand - reading and surfing on the couch - not at a desk where we are currently always forced to sit.

I haven't really decided what I think yet.  They have released a pretty typical apple product though - lacking in lots of areas that we feel are very necessary (no camera (or no two cameras), doesn't support flash, missing usb etc etc) but then we end up learning to live without them somehow - or like the iphone it FINALLY gets the things it should have like copy and past, video, camera, gps,

Anyhow, for a travel computer it looks like it would be pretty ideal.  Great for using on a bus or airplane.  Nice for using in the couch.  I have a feeling I will be pretty tempted to get one, I just haven't rationalized how I will make use of it yet :)  I am a pretty big iPhone fan though so it might not be too hard.
Title: Re: Apple Tablet Announcement *TODAY*
Post by: stockastic on January 28, 2010, 14:11
I guess I don't think it's ideal for travel at all.  Too big for the pocket, no protection for the screen while it's in the bag, and an obvious target for thieves.   I just don't see how this has any big advantage over existing netbooks, except that it's somewhat easier to hold in front of you if you're not at a table.

I expect to be proven wrong in the sense that people will buy tons of these things.  But a lot of people walk around in shoes that don't make any sense, either, because they think they look cool.  ;)

I went home last night with the argument for buying an iPad well rehearsed, with all my bullet points ready... it would be my wife's new computer, easy to do all the things she wants, hook up to the main computer to sync all the latest photos, music and movies, only $500, etc.  Then she asked, "What happens when we drop it on the floor... you know we'll be doing that A LOT."

I pictured that big glass screen cracking, and $500 going down the toilet.  I've seen too many pictures of cracked iPhone screens.  I have an iPod Touch that I've managed to keep safe for 2 1/2 years, but I think it will be a much bigger challenge to protect such a bigger device.  This may be a deal-breaker.

The truckloads of after-market rubber jackets are already rolling - but then it's not so pretty anymore.  I suppose it might not be as fragile as we assume.

But no mouse... won't you drive yourself nuts on web sites with drop-downs, etc?  The touch-screen concept isn't new, and it basically only works on "kiosks" with applications written for it - simple GUIs with big controls...

This is basically for the people who now use their laptops almost exclusively for working on the net, and probably do more reading than writing. If you're a traveler, its about the perfect size.

If you've ever tried leisurely reading something on a laptop, I think you'll agree that a flat device, about the size of a magazine is far better than any laptop. A good touch screen will make you far more connected with the material that you're looking at than any mouse, keyboard or a laptop touchpad. I'm waiting for the feature where you can turn the page of a newspaper or book with a quick swipe down the top right hand corner as if it was a real page.

As for multi-tasking, I think Apple is working towards the time when there will be only one app that is really needed on any computer - the internet browser, so as long as you can have more than one tab open, you'll be multi-tasking.

I hope those who are criticising the lack of a keyboard remember their words when they look back at today's keyboards in the way I look back at the tape drive on a commodore 64.

what will happen if you drop a laptop, netbook, or anything else on the floor.  You just gotta be careful :)

a silicone case is quite helpful too I think.  I had an iphone for 1 year that I had a silicone case on.  I dropped it a few times on concrete and on the floor in the house a couple times - when I sold it and upgraded I could sell it in mint condition.  It looked 100% new with not even the usual fine usage wear.

I've got 4 kids under 10 at home.  Believe me, anything that CAN fall on the floor WILL fall on the floor.  My old white polycarbonate iBook has taken several spills... aside from a chunk now missing from one of the corners, it's still working fine.  My newer titanium MacBook Pro has taken a few falls... I worry more about my hardwood floors when that thing hits.  But an iPad whose entire face is a sheet of glass?  We'll probably crack it within a month, with or without a silicon sleeve around the edges.
