This weekend, I'm going to start burning video files to Bluray disc (something Ive never done before.) My query is about the file type that would be acceptable for the authoring process. Currently, the video files that I want to put on Bluray are MPEG 2 / .m2t. Ive noticed in the past when Ive enquired at commercial businesses about burning Blurays, they've always requested MOV files. I was put off by their steep prices so I decided to buy a Bluray burner of my own. However, should I convert my videos to MOV first or would they be fine as they are? I believe the authoring software that came with the burner is PowerDirector 9.

I'm no expert, but as far as I know... you can add files to the Blu-Ray disk as a 'movie' or use it as a data disk. If It's a movie, then you stick it in your Blu-Ray player and it will start playing... and you'll probably also have the option to set up a menu and scene selection and all that jazz. Like when you buy a Blu-Ray of Star Wars down the shops. Or... you can use it as a data disk and store whatever you want on it... video files, images, documents, music etc.
From the sound of it, they want you to make a data disk that contains the footage as a Mov file. Blu-Ray doesn't use Mov, so it doesn't sound like they want you to make a playable movie disk. In theory, you could provide this on a DVD (or CD or floppy disk), if there was enough storage space on the disk.

I definitely don't want a data disc. What I want is a disc that will play in a Bluray player that is connected to a TV (just like ones that you'd hire from Blockbuster etc) with a menu. So you reckon MOV files won't work for this?

No, Blu-Ray movie disks are encoded in MPEG2 just like your camera. You can edit and render your file to Mov if you want... but when you author a Blu-Ray in your authoring software, it will burn it to disk as an MPEG.

Ah MPEG2 - just like DVD burning. So I guess my m2t files should be fine. That makes me puzzled why those businesses all requested MOV files for their Bluray burning. And they were creating the kind with menus, scene selection etc.

I could be wrong, but I don't think you can have a movie blu-ray in Mov format. You never know!

I think it is possible to covert BR in MOV format. I just Google it for confirmation and by reading couple of article, it seems to be possible.
