I'm trying to call B&H in their phone number here in Brazil (they have one - it is somehow redirected to the store in NYC), but a machine answers they don't open on Sundays. However, their website - both the USA and the Brazilian one shows they are open from 10am to 5pm. Their list of holidays also does not show anything today.

So if anyone can call them at these numbers 800.606.6969 or 212.444.6615 and check if they are open or not, I would appreciate.

I want to place an order but I would like some clarification first.

Thanks!

They don't take orders on Sunday, Maria, neither online nor by phone.  If it is a rush, you might try Adorama.

I just called the 800 number and yes, they are open. I got through to a sales rep ok.

I also believe they do take orders on Sunday, not Saturday. Typically when you go to the website, a popup tells you they are not accepting orders, and I am not getting one right now. I am in the same time zone as B&H.

Not correct.  They don't take orders on Saturday, the Jewish sabbath.  They're open Sunday for online, phone and in-store sales and customer support.  Don't know why they didn't answer the phone today.

Yes, I know they don't work on Saturdays, not even accept online orders. But they should be answering the phone today, according to their website (and they even show NY time).

Thanks for your help.

And adding further Adorama is also closed on Saturdays honoring a religious sabbath. So one more thing that makes them pretty much identical for shopping and prices. :)

Here's my answer madelaide. They have caller ID, saw it was you and avoided answering! LOL

Lets say for example that they have a VOIP 800 number to save money. Internet can go down and the phone still rings on your end, they get nothing. Or too many calls, no one free to answer the phone, so they let it ring. Why pay to put you on hold, when you will call back?

Next time you might try emailing them. I've found that they answer fairly fast? Maybe I'm just lucky?

I emailed them and got a reply today. A very standard one, in fact, explaining the new rules of shipping to Brazil.

I believe this must have reduced their exports to us immensely and maybe they don't have the guy who speaks Portuguese on duty on Sundays, at least not available to answer the phone to us.

BTW, Brazil has the oldest synagogue in the Americas, built by the jews that came here from Holland and who later moved to what is now NYC, then a dutch colony too (Niew Amsterdam). I don't think they are the Hasidic jews that own B&H and possibly also Adorama, but I like to think that , had they not moved to Niew Amsterdam, we would have B&H here.  ;D

Here is a link to the Kazal Zur Israel synagogue, now a museum.

We also have the oldest engineering school in the Americas, even older than your West Point.  ;D

Yes, many people don't realize that South America was an ideal spot to immigrate to in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Ideal for all kinds of reasons, education, opportunity, cultural heights, politically forward looking, instead of "old world". Not that it's so bad now for many professionals. I have relatives originally from Italy that live in Argentine and speak Italian as well as Spanish. Breaking away from Spanish and Italian influences drew many of them. Long time families that moved there. Some others went to Canada, couldn't get into the US. And then the biggest portion who landed and moved to Chicago.

People sometimes don't recognize that the official language of Brazil is Portuguese. Much of this has to do with drawing the dividing lines according to mistaken data, thought to divide the continent in half. Funny how those old mistakes create interesting divisions.

Might as well add that locals here consider "America" to be the USA and forget that Central America and South America, are also included.  :)
