Title: Cheapest new body? EU, Usa, Asia?
Post by: bjorn on July 26, 2007, 10:59
Does anybody know where in the world you can buy the cheapest body? (i'm thinking of buying a canon D5).
Prices differ quite a bit from continent to continent.
I know there is already a big difference between EU & usa, just wondering if Asia (hong-kong or Singapore) would be even cheaper.
It may be worth to look around if I'm there anyway.

Anybody know some websites?

thanks,
Bjorn

I think you are referring to the 5D not D5 and it sure as hell freezing over isn't going to be anywhere in europe unless it's stolen. it's a real tossup between Asia and the US some places in Asia like Hong Kong and Thailand you can find super deals but probably not mail order, if you go the mailorder route then the US is the best. One of the best sites to look up is bhphoto.com

yes, sure 5d.

here an example,
Canon EOS 5D body       $18,690.00HKD
10,7 hong kong dollars in a euro, so comes to 1750 euro.

here i can't find any under 2500 euro.

and that is from the internet, i guess if you look around locally you should get it for 1500 euro at least.

that almost makes it worth flying up there (or in combination with a vacation).
strange world...

Best I could find mail order in the U.S. was 1725 Euro.  But that's only to a U.S. address.  No international shipping, customs, VAT, etc. to add to the price.

Cheapest in Thailand at the moment is THB 85,900, which is equal to EUR 1,867. The price includes Thai VAT, which is 7% (may be deductable when you export it), but I don't think the shop in question does mail order, at least not overseas.

On the other hand, if you combine it with a nice holiday to Thailand and get a cheap airline ticket. Just avoid the rainy season, which is now. November is fine  :)

There's another retailer that is a bit more reputable, and mentions specifically that you'll get a VAT refund, here:

Because of warranty, I wouldn't buy anything expensive abroad unless it was very much cheaper (it was the case when I bought my camera in UK - expensive, but much less than here when I get the VAT refund).

Adelaide

Madelaide, I am not sure about cameras, but many laptops  etc. (e.g. my macbook) come already with a worldwide guarantee since the procedures already globalized...maybe we/you wanna check next time and can save money nevertheless...

the cheapest i've ever seen was in Phnom Penh, it seems all the camera gear sold there is smuggled or coming from gray markets, they were selling D800 bodies for 2300$, at your own risk, but to me they looked 100% genuine.

I live in Taiwan, but I find the cheapest bodies are parallel imports from Hong Kong and Japan. Both the 5D3 and 6D are cheaper than used bodies.
