I've been putting off buying new glasses for myself and my wife for quite a while now.  I really didn't want to pay $1000 for new glasses for both of us.  ($500 each aprox.)  Anyways, some co-workers were talking about where they got theirs and I became interested.  They told me that they buy theirs from http://zennioptical.com  I did a bunch of review checking and didn't find many bad reviews so I figured I would give them a try since I had the glasses prescription.

Well, after some measuring, $150 after shipping and currency conversion, and 2 weeks later, I got all 3 pairs of glasses in the mail.  All I can say is I am pleasantly surprised at my initial thoughts and we have no complaints.

I thought I would share this tip to save money on glasses especially since soo many people are having financial troubles.  Anyways if you order some and you don't like them...... don't blame me. ;D

p.s. if you have any money saving tips or great deals (not related to photography), post them here.  I am sure many would find it interesting.

Thanks, Rick  ;)

Ok went to the site with my experience in the eyeglass field +20 years last 10 as a optical lab manager. Great prices on the frames considering that most of what I saw would cost about $ 2.00. Lenses they are as cheap as $ 1.25 wholesale for single vision lenses when you buy about 100 pairs per month [my orders are usally about 500 pairs every two weeks] I can imagen they probably pay about .50 cents per pair. So at $8.00 for single vision they are still making a small amount but like microstock is the quantity that counts. My only problem is the seg height of the bifocals and the multifocals [progressives] there is where you will find some problems. Let me explain for those that have not yet gone into the realm of having too short of reach to see near.
They will take the vertical measuremt of the frame and follow a general guide of
going about 4 mm of the center to place the bifocal and about 2 mm for the progressive lens. This means that if your nose is a bit wide the general guide will give you the add power to close to your distance vision causing problems. And this will be worse in the progressive which needs to be measured by someone looking at you with the frames placed on your face to get the exact point of reference to be able to place the distance portion on center of your pupil not where it might fall when your glasses come in from the lab. Just a warning the single vision seems fine but be careful on the other lenses.
Man that was too much especially since I'm on vacation  ;D

thanks for the link dragon and the extra info jorge

I am thinking I need to see an optometrist soon as I realize my eyes are getting a little blurrier :(  I have not ever had glasses, but perhaps I am getting old.... or perhaps all this staring at the computer screen has had a negative effect on my eyes.

Either way, it is nice to know a place to get some glasses for less than $500

Thanks Jorge for your added information.  I had seen that site before and was worried about getting progressive glasses for exactly the reasons that you gave but me daughter wants to order glasses in lots of different colours.  So I think that I will give it a miss and tell her to go ahead.

I think the price at Zenni Optical beats the price I got at goggles4u.com. I got my glasses for about $34. I love my glasses though. Thanks for the tip dragon_fang! I'll try Zenni for my next set.

thanks dragon & jorge.

Dragon already got his heart, but jorge is going to have to wait 15 minutes (hope I don't forget like I usually do).

I have a big fat nose and wear progressives, and I always have problems with the progressive starting to high, even when I go to full-featured optromitist.

But when it comes time to replace my single-vision sunglasses, I'll keep this place in mind.

Edit:  I remembered -- jorge got his heart  :-*

That's good to know. Which is bad too, in the sense that tells us we are paying too much for our glasses. Maybe these people should put a booth in shopping malls and start a franchise, which hopefully would drive all glasses down in price like microstock, and we the buyers all win.

I remember when I was younger I bought a watch from a 25 cent machine.  It worked for 2 years before it got water damaged!  Cheapest watch I ever had, and it too was made in China.  I'm actually surprised there isn't a microstock agency based in China, but if there was to be in the future, that fact alone wouldn't worry me.   :)

The glasses industry is one of the most unreal i actually know. Seriously 500$ for a piece of plastic and glass... who's also plastic actually lol. You can buy a pair for 20$ at the drug stores.

Also I can't believe that all those doctors who have achieved doctorate studies, who are supposed to make the science going further, were unable to make any improvement since a 100 years. What they was wearing in 1900... Glasses.

Most of optometrist are against laser correction. They know they will stop selling glasses. Glad we found a way to have them cheaper

:D Sorry in advance for the off-topic addition, but I just gotta say... when I read the title of this thread, I thought it was going to be another person ranting about a blind inspector.

LOL

I've thought about getting laser correction done.  I only know 1 person who got it done here in Winnipeg.  She had to be like 3 feet from the 42" tv to see it properly. :(  Besides me being a chicken, I have heard very few people that get it done actually have 100% improvement.  And if I still need even weak glasses after the treatment, it would be a waste.  The price of glasses doesn't really increase with the decrease of your vision.  I do wish there was a sure fire treatment though.  Glasses suck.  (and so do contacts, just in a different way)

Totally misinformed, if you think Chinese = cheap goods.
Investments in China is now the bigger potential that even RIM, Ipod,Plasma HDTV,etc... are all positioning themselves in China.
The fallacy that the chinese only buys cheap goods is due to the disparity between the "have and have nots". Much like in Brazil.
Anyone who thinks that China is only a place to sell cheap stuff like microstock, you have been totally misinformed at best, or uninformed or/and uneducated at worst.

I only know what my experience tells me. That whatever I wanna buy, theyre some cheaper copys made in china. In some cases good, in some cases totally useless.

Were talking copys here. Not Ipod...

I also know someone who did correction with laser. She also had a perfect vision after this. But now a couple years later she started to need glasses again. But one thing is sure, If she haven't had the operation, she would have a very bad vision today and glasses would not helped at all the situation.

I've had laser correction done in 1998. I had 100% vision after that, and still don't need glasses after 11 years. I will certainly do it again if I need to go back to wearing glasses.

Funny timing on this post.  Late last night on cable TV here in Florida, I say a commercial for a website almost identical to this one!  Same base price -- 8/pr including single vision lenses. Don't remember the ur, but I'm sure I've never seen it before.
