I think the PL has become a bit too fast.  There used to be players that had great skill but weren't fitness fanatics.  Just look at this goal, I doubt a player like Frank Worthington would get a game now, like most sports, there aren't many players that can just use their skills.

Yeah that goal is spectacular, but if you look at the defenders and what they're doing, they're a joke. If you're more into skills than speed, than primera division (la liga) is more for you. But there's really just Barca and Real and I can't watch el classico anymore. Barca is playing like it always plays, but Mourinho just closes the game, sends everyone to the penalty box. That's not football for me. It can be effective, the proof is last year's Inter's title that was won with this strategy (they beat Barca in semifinal with one player down). There's Atletico Madrid, Valencia and Sevilla, but other clubs really lack quality. PL is just the strongest league, but why I like it the most it's because they play open, attacking football. Lots of goals when it comes to the games that teams like Spurs play (very offensive, but they're pretty bad defensively). When it comes to goals, this one is my fav, not just because of the goal itself (he did hit quite a few even more incredible), but because they needed it to go to the next stage and they became the champions by beating Milan. It was THE BEST CL final ever! And the commentary is just great, the best combo really

I love football and a big Liverpool fan. Looking forward to the season starting again and been looking forward to Liverpool getting back on top. I'm still hopeful.  :)

Here's a blog for you Slovenian.

http://www.microstockposts.com/i-love-photography-but-im-mad-about-football/

Indeed football is just so much more than scoring goals. It's the only sport that gives me goose bumps constantly or even almost makes me cry. And Liverpool does it all the time, Gerrard really is the heart of the team and is able to overturn every game. I mean trailing by 3 goals in the final against Milan, who was just playing football out of this world and then winning it! WOOOW! And now that Suarez brought beauty into the game (mad south american skills), it really becomes a spectacular event. I hope they'll go back to the top, where they belong. It still is the greatest club in England and one of the top clubs in the world. I know u've seen it (but others should too), but this dribbling was just so amazing

And that's the man who, IMO, hits the most amazing goals . I really love those goals shoot from 20+ m (up to 45 really). The kind of goals strikers usually don't deliver.

I was just waiting until someone mentioned this sport yanks call football, that is really just rugby for those who are not man enough to play the real thing (so they hide behind helmets and armor) and with so much tactics involved that companies can have a ton of commercials (like with just every American sport) during the breaks and that all those fat ppl can eat enough of hot dogs ;D . C'mon ppl I'm talking about the real thing, sport that brings billions of ppl to watch it on TV at the same time during the WC, not something called superbowl than can barely attract a few dozen million ppl ;) . Sport that requires so much skill, accuracy, finesse ;) ...

I guess you understand American football about as well as I understand international football, a sport I regard as being made up of a bunch of sissies kicking a ball around on a field and rolling around on the ground crying when someone kicks you in the shin. ;)

I've tried to get into it, but It's lost on me. My wife is from Ecuador and I've tried watching games with her, but it's a lost cause.

Indeed, to each his own. I prefer the skillful version, you prefer simpler things, more goals etc. And yes they are sissies, I don't like it either, but that's the only downside for me. I've never really tried to get into american football, it really has no appeal to me. I'd watch rugby, at least there's constant action, not just pushing ahead for a few yards. Most of the time you don't watch the game, since there's more breaks than action. And what's the point of even having goals? You'd have to be naive to miss a free kick. I mean in football you have a much smaller goal, GK and defenders. And that's what makes it interesting.

The only version of sport that you managed to make better is basketball. I don't watch it, but if I were watching it, I'd watch NBA every time over European league (or however it's called). Bad defending really makes it interesting and more spectacular.

I never knew you had it in you. You actually managed to praise something American. By the way didn't Basketball originate in the States, so if the Europeans have their own league and you prefer the American version, then didn't the Europeans manage to make it worse? Another by the way, I was just reading up that Basketball was originally played with a football (soccer ball).

I might be wrong about the origins, it's not a sport a know much about (I do know all the rules etc). Of course I managed. You make lots of things well, especially show business. But this thread was unfortunately derailed by some ignorant yanks that needed to interject with posts about american football and to make it worse they usually don't read sarcasm to well and are easily offended. That's why I sometimes have trouble communicating with you (americans). I tried to put it back on topic a couple of times, but I was not successful. At the end I could add that I was being poky or provocative as usually, but that's just my style. My intention is not to fight but to either joke around or get into an argumented debate (having different opinions sure is more interesting than always agreeing).

Well that right there is a huge misconception of American football. It's often referred to as a "game of inches." It's the tiniest details that often contribute greatly to the outcome of a game, and skill makes all the difference. It's not a game of brute force, pushing forward to gain a few yards. It's as much a game of skill and finesse as football is, maybe more so in some regards. And simple? Ha! Ever seen an NFL playbook? It's a huge binder with hundreds of pages. Those guys spend as much time in the classroom as on the practice field. It's a complex game that requires skill and expertise in many areas.

And often there are no more goals in American football than international football, just more points per goal, making it seem like a higher-scoring game than it really is. Many games are decided by just 1 or 2 "goals" combined between the two teams.

Sorry for calling you american, I could only deduct from you defending them or better said making a comment about me being positive about them for once and your English, which seems perfect to me. Actually they aren't all that good in grammar and often can't write properly; for instance your instead of you're, there instead of their etc.

Well thanks for educating me on american football. I believe they study their playbook, strategies etc, but I just can't spot that finesse in the game. A player either makes that pass or he doesn't, I don't see them curving the ball etc like in football. They also complete that run over the "finish line" or they don't, but it's just about speed, not technique, like you see players dribbling, spinning the defenders like they're on a merry-go-round. To me american footballers are just great athletes, but never magicians (sounds kinda weird in English, but I can't see they could call someone el magico or something similar;). Check that link of Suarez making an incredible dribble, pushing the ball past 4 defenders in the penalty box and just a few sq m. You of course can do the same, demonstrate that finesse with a clip ;)

Just because native English speakers make grammatical mistakes, it doesn't mean they don't know it. You gave 2 common errors people make, often when they are typing in a hurry. I know I sometimes make these mistakes too, but I know the grammar, well most of the time, although probably not as well as a Scandinavian for example. By the way the word American is with a capital A, the same like S for Slovenian. I know you know that and I know that you probably don't want to type a capital A for American, in the same way as I don't type a capital S in istock. It's often small things which reveal a lot about people, although you are pretty direct enough for people to notice you have a small thing. Sorry if that didn't come out quite right, sometimes my English isn't so perfect. ;D

The draw results are in http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/preliminarydraw/news/newsid=1483519/index.html . For once we got a relatively easy group (contrary to the Euro qualifications) Group E: Norway, Slovenia, Switzerland, Albania, Cyprus, Iceland.

There's a lot of skill in American football.  Just try throwing the ball accurately over a long distance when your being hunted down.  Sometimes it's really hard to tell if the QB or RB has the ball.  I still don't really understand all the different plays.  I like watching it but it would be much better if the 60 minute game didn't last over 3 hours.  I quite often get bored, it has to be a really good game for me to watch it live.

Not all conventional footballers are sissies.  I wouldn't like to get in to a fight with Vinnie Jones or Roy Keane.  It's a shame that some players spoil the game but I blame the referees and officials for not stopping them.  If they sent off players that obviously faked injury or banned them for several games after reviewing the match, they would soon stop doing it.  American football officials seem to be much better but the game doesn't flow and I think that's probably worse.

I like American football best when they have used all their time outs in the last 2 minutes and they need a TD.

Lets see because you don't understand sarcasm and humor, even though you claim to be dishing it out and when you call people names and insult them, it's doesn't play well either?  ???

derailed by some ignorant yanks

Football is the American Sport, it's and English speaking forum and you could have used Soccer or Futbol, FIFA World Cup, or Association Football and taken no heat. Then there's the issue of the sophisticated fan behavior of Soccer fans, which is so despicable that it's hard to believe. Throwing bodily waste, beating on each other like little thugs, beating up the refs. and murdering players for not winning? Wow, that's some serious "fun" and joking material.

However just because I don't understand people running up and down a field for an hour and scoring no points, then deciding the match by free kicks, don't hold it against me. I like the other form of football, I grew up with it, where it's like a like chess game, constantly changing, and guess what, they usually have scoring, which makes it more interesting. If I grew up in Romania I wouldn't have a clue about American football, I admit it.

Here's my honest answer (which is stupid and will never happen)  :D Make the goals wider so the goalie can't possibly cover them, more shots, more scores. Now in hockey it would make sense because the goalie has become some wide version, padded, almost cyborg figure and gained width to block with. At least soccer has integrity in their rules and has remained virtually unchanged by equipment. No live ball, no bigger rackets, no one gets high tech blades that move, no wind tunnel testing of helmets, slick suits, or titanium drivers.

Lets hear it for soccer being pretty much the same game it was in 1863 with the FA cup. You do have history and tradition on your side.

Indeed and you're (all) proving my point time and time and time again. Just take another read of the thread. Besides me only 2 people managed to stay on topic, which is football. The rest just kept on raping us with your version of the sport that I don't care about. At all. I tried to tell you that in a polite and direct, blunt way, but it's no use. You ppl just have to enforce your way of thinking onto everyone, not just thinking the rest of the world cares about your opinion, but you feel obligated to do so. Just like you're bringing democracy around the world. But the sad thing is, we Europeans live in a free world. You don't ;)

Football is the American Sport, it's and English speaking forum and you could have used Soccer or Futbol, FIFA World Cup, or Association Football and taken no heat.

Again, why?!? The whole world calls it football, just because 300 million ppl (that's less than 5% of the world's population) calls another sport football. And again, you Americans feel the need to make us take the heat. You see how ridiculous and absurd that is?

If I grew up in Romania I wouldn't have a clue about American football, I admit it.

I don't have to remind you of the percentage again, now do I? And you just had to degrade it down to what you consider a 3rd world country to make a point. It tells a lot about you ;)

Indeed it's stupid. Totally Americanised, since all you usually do is make things bigger (including yourselves ;D ). Again, nobody would care for that, football it's by far the most popular sports in the world. I'll use a phrase of yours (American) I like: don't fix it if it ain't broken. Billions of fans would agree on that ;) .

Lets hear it for soccer being pretty much the same game it was in 1863 with the FA cup. You do have history and tradition on your side.

So big of you to give us a tiny recognition at the end.

Are you the new self anointed Pope of forum decorum?

I'm looking forward to being bored to death in a few weeks and I have a way to avoid the same with FA cup or FIFA. I change the station. You should try it, unless someone is strapping you to a chair and forcing you to watch Am. Football? Just say no and watch something else. Problem solved. Forum debate ended also. To each their own.

And to be what you want, I'll answer the OP.

I think soccer is a horrible word.  It's only really used in the UK when speaking to people from the US or by Brits that have become over Americanised.  I don't mind people from the US calling our football game soccer but there's no way I'm using that word.  We have completely different meanings for lots of words, I have no problem with having two different sports with the same name.
