I think soccer is a horrible word.  It's only really used in the UK when speaking to people from the US or by Brits that have become over Americanised.  I don't mind people from the US calling our football game soccer but there's no way I'm using that word.  We have completely different meanings for lots of words, I have no problem with having two different sports with the same name.

Finally words of wisdom ;)

Lagereek just stopped by to poke us, as usually. Don't take me wrong, I've nothing against it, I do that too sometimes when I get bored ;D

Association Football? Round ball football? The world needs an answer that pleases everyone.

Reportedly, the man who stands at the origin of the word soccer is Charles Wreford Brown, an Oxford student. The name soccer is used in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and some parts of Ireland, because the name football for two different games is confusing. You're against a word that was invented in England to name the game.

From wikipedia "Association football is known as "football" in the majority of countries where English is an official language, such as the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth Caribbean (including Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and others), Malta, India, Nigeria, Cameroon, Pakistan, Liberia, Singapore, Hong Kong and others, stretching over many regions including parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Central America."

They do go on to mention some UK football programmes that have soccer in the title, like "Soccer AM".  The presenters have said they hate the word soccer and were forced to use it when the programme was shown in the US.  The vast majority in English speaking countries use the word football and don't like using the word soccer.

I have no problem calling other games in countries like the US and Australia football, even if it's just glorified egg chasing :)  Perhaps logically any game with a prolate spheroid shaped ball should be called rugby?  At least Gaelic football uses a round football.

Yes I agree, soccer is a horrible word, I dont even know where its originated from?  Football, is really the proper terminology.

I'm a girl from the UK who hates football - but my understanding from many male football obsessives of my acquaintance is that the whole world calls English football 'football' except America, where they have to call it 'soccer' to differentiate from their own game (which I agree is oddly named, given the apparently minimal use of feet).

So I don't think this disagreement should be taken as anything personal against America, or American Football.  I think there's a misunderstanding that 'soccer' is more commonly used in the world than it really is.  IME, that's a pretty exclusively American thing.

I do congratulate the US on basketball - I loved watching the Harlem Globetrotters on TV as a child, and our only equivalent back then was 'netball' (a girl's game that was compulsory at my school and is very dull by comparison!  Same objective, but far less dynamic).

Our equivalent of 'baseball' is 'rounders'.

I don't mean to derail this thread - just wanted to comment on the different terminologies.  Nothing to add on the game of football itself, so I'm off now.  :)

I really liked playing rounders at school and conkers.

I used to love rounders - but one day when I was 12, that rock-hard little ball fell from about 50ft in the sky, went straight through my hands and whacked me in the knee cap.  That knee still makes crunching noises when I go upstairs to this day.

Strange that boys who play cricket get to wear knee and shin protectors, while girls who play rounders do it in short PE skirts and unprotected legs.

But now I really am derailing this thread, so I'll stop there.

I think that's why I was so fascinated with rounders. :D
I still have a dodgy finger from playing basketball at some kind of summer school thing. Boy, do I hate that game!!

I always thought this was an interesting read:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soccer

Quote
The rules of football were codified in England by the Football Association in 1863 and the name association football was coined to distinguish the game from the other forms of football played at the time, specifically rugby football. The term soccer originated in England, first appearing in the 1880s as an Oxford "-er" abbreviation of the word "association".

Englishmen messed up classification but rest of the world made it clear: rugby is just rugby (I have never heard before that it was called rugby football) and football is used around a world for game when you kick the ball. Since American version of rugby football is played only there rest of the world calls is American Football.

I like that nice and simple but you left out soccer.

Do you read the other message, it originated in England and some countries still use it.

Quote
As a player Escobar was no more than a solid international defender, but the Colombian will forever be remembered as the man murdered for making a defender's mistake.

Colombia had arrived at the finals in the United States in 1994 with high expectations.

An impressive qualifying campaign had included a 5-0 win over Argentina in Buenos Aires and the Colombians played with a dazzling, carefree style that seemed to have been lost from the South American game. Valderrama, Asprilla and Rincon were drawing comparisons with the 1970 Brazilians, and Pele tipped them to win.

But Colombia's preparations were conducted against a backdrop of rumors that betting syndicates and drug cartels were exercising their influence over the squad. Coach Hernan Gomez was reported to have received death threats over matters of team selection.

Whatever the truth, Colombia's players were affected. They looked edgy and unfocused as they suffered a shock 3-1 loss in their opening game against Romania.

Escobar's moment of misfortune came in Colombia's next game against the United States. Stretching to cut out a cross, he deflected the ball into his own net. The U.S. went on to win 2-1 and the Colombians went home early.

In Medellin 10 days later, Escobar was shot 12 times by a gunman as he left a nightclub. With each bullet his assailant was reported by police to have shouted: "Goal."

Thanks for the video-answer Sharpshot.  I think I thanked you for a definitive answer in another thread earlier.  You appear to be the oracle of MSG today  ;D

Well thanks for educating me on american football. I believe they study their playbook, strategies etc, but I just can't spot that finesse in the game...

...You of course can do the same, demonstrate that finesse with a clip ;)

What a minute, now you're being just racist! White men can't do that ;) ;D (u can really feel the rhythm in there and see great athleticism).

But still, just avoiding defenders holding the ball comparing to dribbling it around them with your feet or even juggling it, is something else ;) .

Yeah I've seen these women teams playing in lingerie, now they've started a similar basketball league. That's really the only way I'd watch American football. Well at least the "highlights" :P . I'm not the kind of person who'd watch a game for hours to see a nip slip :)

I could hardly see the ball in that video. Everytime is just some guy trying not to be caught. He might as well run without the ball.

If the guy being chased would wear a red t-shirt, the game could as well be called "Catch the Red Riding Hood"

To be honest I find it hard to understand Stevie G, when he doesn't try to speak without accent, or even worse, Carra. I usually get the first reply, then he just forgets he's on TV and Scouses his way through interview. It really is easier for me to understand Scots, than ppl from Liverpool. What a shame, since I'm most interested in their (football) interviews.

I like Redknapp's attitude as well, he won't let anyone bust his balls during the interview :D
Harry Redknapp "I'm no wheeler dealer" x rated reaction to Sky's Rob Palmer

BTW, not a good start of the season for Liverpool, I was really disappointed with the way they played 2nd half and of course Suarez's penalty kick miss was really shameful. Although he made it up in the next few minutes and played well in the first half. Carroll seems to really be overpayed, his effectiveness is low, Suarez and Kuyt work a lot better together. And most importantly, the team really needs Gerrard, he's been missing for over half a year.

I just saw a spectator who was near Nanni, implying with a hand motion he's a wanker. Lol I really like that word. Wanker ;D . And we can all admire Rooney's hair transplant as well, at first I didn't recognize him, the director had to put a close up on him, so that we could realize it was him :)
