Title: House With Photography Studio for Sale
Post by: patballard on March 20, 2009, 10:25
My husband and I bought our dream home for retirement in 2005. It's just outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico in a lovely area. We bought it from Myron Taplin. He was the non-model photographer for the Peruvian Connection catalog. Then life changed. My husband's job of almost twenty years in Albuquerque disappeared. I got ill and had to have surgery. My husband did find his dream job, but it's in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. If anyone is looking for a lovely house in New Mexico with a photography studio, email me. I'd be glad to discuss the details. We hate to let the house go, but my husband is enjoying his teaching job so much that he's decided not to retire for years. Plus, managing two houses is a major financial and time drain. New Mexico is wonderful!

why not trying renting the studio/home to another photographer?
i remember in my younger days (ie. MUCH MUCH younger, heh!heh!) when i was travelling across Canada working for anyone and anywhere, one of my contractors was a photographer and a bovine farmer. he couldn't afford to keep both, so he rented his studio and hired me to be his lab tech and studio mgr, until the studio was finally rented out by another photographer in the area.
then i left to travel the rest of this lovely and spacious land .
whatever happens, good luck to you and your husband. we have the same "profession" today (i am both a teacher and photographer. hard times, yes ! lots of doors have closed, and we have to learn to open windows).

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I really appreciate your suggestion. I didn't want to go into all of the details in my original email, but we rented the house out for 15 months. It's just not possible to manage a property from this distance. We had a property management company, and it still took most of my time. Plus, we had the renters from hell!

Thank you again for the suggestion.

Pat

not at all, you're welcome.
but yes, i have to agree, that's the one catchword for renting out, ie. the renters from hell.  which is why references and history check are vital, esp when you're leaving your real estate property in the hands of someone else. especially for absentee owners. we had the same problem with our property in latin america.
i wish you all the best in selling it. peace of mind altogether.

Interesting post, however, I dont' know how well posting on an internationally diverse forum is going to help you much.  I don't know many people who are willing to uproot just for a house with a studio.  I know the market sucks in the US, so I feel your pain because you bought the house for multiple times what you will sell it for now but you are better off in the local papers.

Thanks

I would soooo love a new house with a built in studio.  Unfortunately it would have to be in Tampa Bay area of Florida to be of any use to me.

I wish you luck in your quest for good buyers.  You never know - there could be someone in NM here that would jump at it.  :)

Do you have photos of the property and the studio?
What is the square footage of the home and what are the dimensions of the studio?
Also, what size lot is the property on & is the area zoned for a business?

I'm afraid that you left a lot of details out of your original post.

Lastly, of course what is the asking price for the proporty?
