Title: How Long Is Your Commute To Work?
Post by: Allen on May 22, 2009, 07:18
As I was driving home from work yesterday, I thought it would be interesting to see who has the longest total commute to/from work.  This means you must add up the time it takes to get to work and again the time to get home.

My commute time is 80 minutes everyday, going 100 kilometers per hour driving 95% on the highway.

This morning took me a bit longer than normal as I hit congestion around the front door as my girlfriend decided to put her shoes on in front of me adding another 10 seconds on to my short walk down the hall to my office from my bedroom. If I dont hit traffic I can normally do it it 4-5 seconds! Sometimes I take the scenic route via the toaster and kettle if I am really feeling crazy!

similar here.  I have the trip down pretty quick now, after trying out a few different routes and trying different ways of commuting.  The trip generally clocks in around 4-5 seconds but can take up to double that long if I take the long route.

Oh I am jealous! On a good day I have 30 min. to work and about 45 min. home. So that is 75 min. and 44 miles to and back from my workplace. At least I get to see the ocean every day for about a minute on my way.

From my bed to my desk it's about 2 seconds. If I jump I might make it in less than half a second  :)

Wow you guys are (mostly) lucky so far.  Having a long commute sucks, I wish I could work from home.  Maybe soon, but not yet.  :)

Synchronizing the coffee pot with the computer can be tricky, and then there is always the wardrobe issue...boxer's or shorts... hmmm?

It's about 5-6 minutes.  I have stairs and there is always rush hour traffic on them when I get up (my dog thinks its some kind of competition to beat me up the stairs every morning).  Then I have to make a pit stop in the kitchen to prepare my coffee (this is in an effort to get my vision back).  I then return to my route (down the hall) with another stop at the 'rest area' and then to work about 6 feet away from the 'rest area'.  I know what you're thinking "stairs?!? How do you do it?" - its difficult, but I manage.

Total of 160 mins for me (about). I travel about 86 km to work (and the same distance back in the evening) - 3 times a week. The luxury of living in my hometown.

It's about 2 and a half hours for the round trip (much of which is spent in traffic congestion trying to cross the bridge). Thank goodness I don't have to work in the office every day!

About 20 minutes each way to drive 13 miles.  Can be much worse during snow or when an accident backs things up.

Fourteen steps down for me too although I normally like to drop into a little place I know called 'my kitchen' to grab a coffee before getting down to work.

Same here, as usual stopped by the kettle to warm water for tea, let the dog out, stopped in the bathroom, hit the forums a few seconds later. Probably walk all the way downstairs to the studio later this morning. I'll warm up of course so I don't hurt myself.

About 35 min each way for me for a total of 70 mins. This time can easily double (or triple) with any traffic hick-up.  :'(

This gets me thinking of this guy in Africa. Who is running in front of Lions barefoot to work everyday for 3 hours single trip. Coming home with a half empty bag of flour to 10 kids.

And you guys have to drag yourself around a pile of laundry to get to the computer.    I´m so sorry ;)

I got it easy now, it only takes me about two seconds to roll out of bed and crawl into my office down the hall. Its going to be really tough when im done building my studio and have to put some slippers on so my feet dont get cold on the concrete floor.  ;)

I'm one of the lucky folks who works at home.  Unless I am shooting.

Longest commute to a (non vacation/travel) shoot was last month when we drove four hours on a Saturday (two there, two back) to meet up with some  models and photograph them in their home.  Not at all sure the pictures will be worth it, but the models have been so sweet about coming to me it seemed time to return the favor :)

FWIW I can sympathize with the commuters.  My husband has a 2 hour (1 each way) drive to teach in Tampa.  He loves the job, but as he doesn't get off until 7pm it means we don't eat dinner until after 8pm most nights.  Which sucks.

Just ordered him a nice new car stereo with ipod jack for Father's day to make the drive more pleasant.

To job no. 1 (teaching): 25 min/17 km
To job no. 2 (teaching): 45 min/29 km + a ferry (15 min)
To job no. 3 (photo) and 4 (internet based): a couple of seconds
To job no. 5 (SAHM): 0, as they come crawling into my bed when they think it is morning.

I don't mind so much, as I enjoy driving, the routes are quite scenic, and there is not much traffic, but it is a bit much those days when I go to job no. 1 in the morning and job no. 2 in the evening (opposite directions), just having time to feed the kids and grab a cup of coffee in between. One day soon I'll plan better so I get time to stop and take som photos along the road.

For the next 3 weeks it's a 6 minute drive 4 nights a week to shoot a soccer League.
35 minute drive to shoot a League in the city the other days.
20 minutes to my lab for pickups, but I tend to loiter and chat while I'm there, so add another 15.
For the rest of the summer... look for me at the neighbor's pool 2 doors down.
Most of my work is close to home or sitting on my butt in front of the computer.

Well I did hit traffic today, there was an accident in the hallway (spilled coffee) and traffic was backed up for tiles.
All total my commute is well I don't commute I live in my studio so when I step through the doorway of my bedroom I am at work.

2.5 hours EACH way, after my company decided to move the offices to (admittedly) nicer and (accidentally) cheaper location. I am considering working from home or quitting...

OK, for the OUTSIDE workers I think I am the winner for the shortest distance :  2,5 minutes by car, or 1100 meters (yes meters!).  Yes I know I could walk that distance easily, but (1) this is Belgium and that means LOTS OF RAIN, and (2) I do my shopping right after work and for that I need the car (good excuse?).

we live "way out of town" (about 25km) and it takes about 20 minutes if I dont get stuck behind the school bus (too often lately :() sometimes we see another car and have to sit behind it too.  we are thinking about moving closer because we spend too much time travelling.

I knew there more things than humor that Locke and I have in common. Sorry to go off topic, kind of, but I used to drive down the street, through a park, and three or four blocks into the industrial park. Less than two miles. Now I've made it even shorter. (not intentionally) Recliner - across room - computer desk.

across the bedroom, upsatirs hallway, down the stairs to the office and basement studio.....the biggest pile ups happen when the cat or the dog decide to race me down the stairs, usually tripping me in the process. pretty sweet working from home, I have been freelancing full-time for about six years.

Well I've traveled about 22,000 miles through 13 countries over the last 8 months to get where I am now, but I have been working in between ;)... on a daily basis it takes about as long as I need to open my eyes and stagger out of bed.

It takes me about five minutes to get from home to the studio. I used to work a lot from home but now we've expanded I seem to spend more and more time at the studio. It's pretty cool place to work so I don't mind at all. Surprised to see so many people working from home.

Interesting Phil. Do you have increased productivity/income as a direct result of having the studio that more than compensates for the increased overhead that comes with it?

Living in the UK where commercial property costs are sky-high it doesn't seem like a practical possibility at all for me __ especially when it is not my intention to work my arse off. After 4 years of work I reckon that my existing microstock income, which I can live in reasonable comfort from, might just about cover the costs of rent & rates for a small commercial unit.

When I talked about work, I meant my real work.  Now when it comes to photography, my work can be in my room or on the other side of the world, so commuting time may vary A LOT.  ;D

On Monday, Tuesday and every other Friday I work from home.  On other days it's 3 hours round trip (90 minutes each way) and a total of about 140 miles. (Around 70 miles each way)  I'm quite thankful for those work-at-home days! :)
