Title: Illusions of Grandeur for Newbies
Post by: Bad Company on August 18, 2017, 21:56
I've seen my fair share of newbies coming here after they pass the so called Shuttterstock test, which really isn't one after they changed it to only one image has to pass out of ten,  and all their images are accepted. They think the $$ will be flying in now!  When in fact Shutter takes basically anything and they will not make many sales due to the images being low quality in technical and/or commercial value.  Seems like we have to be the bearer of bad news to them  :-\

I guess after a while they will learn for themselves ;-).  The lax standards aren't  doing them or anyone else any favours I think. When I started doing this I learnt a heck of a lot about technical requirements after many of my "great" shots were unceremoniously rejected. Now unless I make a grave error everything sails through and my standards have no doubt dropped.

I've started looking back at some "old" images that were rejected only 1 year ago and they're getting through.

Here's one (it's a bit of a bad technical shot of some ropes for climbing on a rock face) at 100%.

Several years ago, I took some college classes and they stopped giving out Ds and Fs so people wouldn't get frustrated and quit school.

Except the more crap they accept (Ds and Fs), the harder it is to find the gems...

This hasn't changed much no matter what agency you are talking about. The little ones take everything, have no exam ever, nothing changed since IS did the same  when they drop their submission limits and review standards.

New people think it's easy money just like they did in the golden days.
Then are  disappointed and come to MSG to complain.

I don't think its the newbies that are the champion complainers ;-)

It's true, they come here full of enthusiasm and hope...until we throw a bucket of cold water on them  ;)

True, they often post that they are thrilled with their tiny sales volume/$$*.
If things were that bad when I started as they are now, I'd never have been motivated enough to stick with it.
But then, if iS had been as bad (to contributors) then as they are now, I wouldn't have started at all.  ::)

*which may well constitute a 'reasonable' amount in some countries.

So true. I've already felt it by myself. At the beginning I was sure that, "Here I am, a super photographer! Since now will earn every day"...yeah, yeah, so naive ;D ;D ;D

Completely agree! The new guys are usually full of beans, glass half full etc... it's the old skool crew that are bitterly shaking their fists and shouting 'get off my land you pesky kids'!
