Samsung 24" (T260) for 499.99$ (CAN) barely same as US dollar
Contrast: 20000:1
Luminostity: 300cd/m2 (in square meter)

I didn't give you the Samsung link because you're better to go to your best electronic store one to see the products.

For lower price

Acer 24" (P243WBD)
Contrast: 3000:1 (I have 3000:1 and it's enough I think)
Luminosity: 400cd/m2 (in square meter)

Calibration's more important than the actual monitor, so the colours you're seeing on screen are as true as possible. I'm still looking around for an affordable but good calibration device though.

The monitor I'm using at the moment is a Samsung 24" LCD, SyncMaster 245B. Very nice monitor to work with in general. Cost me around $750AUD though monitor prices (like a lot of other things) are much higher in Australia.
