On topic or off? I couldn't find the old thread so here's a new one...

After years of losing money, Newsweek announced on Thursday that it will stop printing its magazine and become a digital-only publication.

Newsweek is leaving, and they are one of the best and most popular news magazines. If you depend on magazines, be wary and look for more distribution in other markets.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) News Corp.s Dow Jones unit said Thursday that it is closing down SmartMoney magazine but will continue to operate and expand the personal-finance publications digital operations.

On the somewhat positive side (optimistic?)

Niche magazines replaced regionals as the most fertile launch category in the first quarter of this year, with new restaurant, hunting & fishing and lifestyle titles hitting newsstands.  (source:  http://www.foliomag.com/2012/52-magazine-launches-12-closures-q12012)

Sad to hear that. I always hate to see magazines and newspapers with a long history disappear from the newstands. Had a few stock shots used in Newsweek back in the day (nothing glamorous like front covers or anything). Saying that, when did I last read it? -my subscription ran out a long time ago - and these days I get most of my news from television or the internet.
Still, I'm not all bad -won a Kindle last year and it's still in the box. Just went on holiday to Greece and went out to buy REAL books to take. How can you read a Page Turner when you can't turn the pages ;D Regards, David.

I heard that about Newsweek.  It's a shame.  I used to subscribe years ago, but last time I picked up a Newsweek is was little more than a brochure.  Very few pages.

I still subscribe to Time.  Hope they don't follow suit.  I like the feel of holding an actual magazine in my hands when I am reading it.

Happened about a year ago with Cycle News, a weekly motorcycle racing publication.  One of the oldest and most respected.  They came back as "digital only" and are much more difficult to work with.

Time and Newsweek were digging their own grave since a long time.

They can blame the internet and the economic recession but their quality went down the drain and that's why they lost readers little by little.

It's a good news Newsweek is dead, hope the others will follow soon.

More so than readers the loss of advertisers affects a magazine.

I agree Newsweek's quality went way down, but I still enjoy Time.  Great columnists, and good reporting.  I just prefer to get it in the old fashioned paper form, rather than on my tablet.

I have a Kindle Fire that was a gift. I started reading one book, I think I made it to chapter two?

I still like a book or magazine in my hands. Although I do confess to reading way too much on the web.  :)

I see lots of people saying that they like physical books/magazines better than digital. For me (and my wife, son, mother, and mother-in-law) it's just the opposite. After having a Barnes & Nobel Nook for about 18 months, I tried to read one of our 500+ paperbacks and couldn't do it. Same for the wife.

Anyone want to buy a great library of fantasy/sci-fi?  :P

I thought I'd read it in the tent (which is now a camper of sorts) Maybe next year? I do more reading sitting outside than anywhere else, during the Summer. That could be part of the reason why books work better. I'll see in the Winter if I get to it, indoors. I still just wanted the B&W Kindle and someone decided I needed the Fire because it was color and did movies and video. She's sweet, but even for a gadget guy, it's too much.
