Well, Sjlocke has been bugging me to create this site forever now, so here goes  ;)

I have started a microstock 'social network' for lack of a better term at microstock.me.

The site is obviously not meant to compete with MicrostockGroup.  It isn't a forum.  Discussion will still happen on microstock.me of course, but it would be geared towards allowing people to have conversations between smaller groups of people, or private discussions within groups etc.  The site was also designed to give a place for microstock photographers to have a 'profile' page, a place to send people when they wanted to know more about them, or to sign up with agencies under their referral links.  Lots of photographers have their own website, which of course would be better, but for those who don't, this could be a solution.  You can see my profile here for example.  So when someone asks what I do or asks me about microstock photography I can send them there so they can sign up under my referral links and I can connect with them.

Anyone is also able to create their own groups.  The groups can be public, private and hidden.  That way if you wanted to have a small discussion group with a few people concerning 'selling strategies on Shutterstock' :), or have a group just with your friends, or just Canon photographers you can.

So to summarize, why I think the site could be useful
  • It will allow members to have private / small discussions with other members - at their own control
  • Give members a 'microstock homepage', a place to send potential referrals

Compared to MicrostockGroup, I would say that MicrostockGroup is a group discussion, a large round table discussion arena allowing everyone equal opportunity to talk about everything.  Microstock.me is the place for chat within small groups, limiting the people who are involved.  If it was a conference, MicrostockGroup is the socializing party event, microstock.me is the private meetings that follow.

If there is interest in the site, I'll work at integrating parts of MicrostockGroup and Microstock.me to compliment each other.

Good job Tyler, I will enrol as soon as I'm near a real computer. I've spoken to a few people before about having a place where certain level of members can discuss things in private and this could be the answer.

Just signed up, Tyler, but when I go to login, the wordpress box is already filled in for a second, then my email in the username field disappears and it wiggles, meaning that is not correct. Not sure what else I should put in there?

EDIT: Actually Tyler you can go ahead and just cancel my account. I'm thinking you created the site mostly so that private groups could be opened, and those groups are designed to filter out smaller contributors. I won't be able to participate and my comments are irrelevant, so there's really no sense in me belonging. Thanks anyway.

I've joined and created a group called 'Diamond club', if you qualify send a membership request.

The idea of the group is not to create an elite 'them vs us' mentality but a place for the highest selling microstock contributors to discuss business matters that may be of interest only to them. Any general interest matters will I have no doubt be discussed here for all to see.

One more thing this group is for contributors only. No agency owners, employees or admins will accepted, the reason for this is to discuss without fear of reprisal.

Well the site certainly does allow 'private groups' or groups with similar interest but that doesn't mean they only filter out one targeted group.  There is nothing stopping anyone from creating a 'newbies' group, or a 'i do this just for fun' group, or 'less than 100 images' group etc.  Groups can also be made on any other subject like location or camera type, language preference etc.

Groups are also only one part of the site.  The other goal was to give a smaller community for the people who wanted (you can just see the posts of you 'friends') and to make a way for people to have a microstock profile page highlighting all their portfolio's and images.  The profile page will need to be worked on a bit still to make it highlight peoples images if they want

Cathy - I hope my Diamond Group didn't spark this reaction, I'll admit the group is designed to filter out the smaller contributor and I've clearly mentioned that in the description.

But in defence of Tyler - The majority of us do this anyway either by way of email, PM's, phonecall or meetings. All Tyler has done is create a much needed site where we can have these discussions easily and conveniently and to have the option to participate or not. This forum is a great place but like some others I've spoken to it's becoming harder to discuss things at a peer level due to not everybody being on the same level, threads get diluted and the original point of discussion diverted to the stage it's almost impossible to work out what's relevant and what isn't.

It's all a moot point, because I can't even log in. If you read my post above, I created an account name, using my email address, and a password. I received an email. I clicked the link. I thought it activated. But I can't log in. I just tried clicking the link in the email again, and was taken to a page that says there was a problem activating, and I needed to enter an activation code. So I copied the link from the email and used the characters after the = sign and entered. The screen refreshed but nothing happened. I still can't log in. I give up.

I registered to kind of park my personal page there but I do not see how another forum would help. Just one more distraction :-)

there is no restriction on who can join the site, but when people create groups within the site they can restrict who can join those groups.

I wonder why it seems to be working for everyone else? No matter, thanks for deleting, Leaf. Maybe I'll try some other time.

Some of us are having a small problem? Firefox also. Do I need to use something else to sign up? Got this one:

Tried Google Chrome - That name is already in use. OK, we all love computers. ;)

I just created a private group called  "Top Tier Non-Exclusive Microstockers". Basically,  to participate your total downloads from iStock, Fotolia and/or Dreamstime must be over 30,000. This could be a combination of all or any of the three. For approval you must give home links of to those sites to show your credential. As well you must be a non-exclusive.

Thanks Tyler, this is an awesome initiative.    Denis

Thanks for the hint. I might have gotten to that eventually. ;)

That was all that was wrong. Confirmation of registration and validation went into my spam folder.

All fine now.

I'm happy you like the site.
I'm glad you took the initiative to create a group - we now have three sort of similar groups though.  Full time microstock photographers (which I started), where I said you had to have over 1000 images and earn over 50% of your income from microstock, RT's group (Diamond group) which you have to have diamond on istock or gold on fotolia, and then your group with total downloads over 30,000.  I think we may be spreading ourselves a little thin with three groups?  I would imagine many of the same people would be in all the groups... perhaps I should make you an admin of the group I started already and we can drive that one together?

The conditions should include other aspects too. I think Denis' is the most appropiate. For example, I am in top tier at SS - 0.38 (which means at least about 30k sales by itself if I'm not mistaking), but I am bronze at istock with only 300 files, because their upload system was too much for my patience. However, I am full time on photography (mostly stock).

Bummer. I might actually fit into Denis' group, except my 30,000 are from IS and SS, not FT. Oh well. I'll wait until the dust settles and see if I fit anywhere. If not, no biggie. I really should be doing more actual work, instead of spending time talking about doing work.  ;)

Yeah it is really tricky to know where to draw a line or how to draw it.

I have let iStock slide a lot as well while Dreamstime and Shutterstock sales look a lot better.  The group I already started could change it's 'rules' a bit - my main point was that perhaps the groups were similar enough that they could be combined.

.. or on second thought, if our 'requirements' are different enough, then perhaps is is OK to have a few different groups?!

Tyler,

True those three groups would be overlapping each others; however I found that each one of the other two groups to be a little restrictive in ways that really should not be on some other equally productive microstockers.

Regarding your created group the full time microstock photographers, I found that having to earn over 50% of your income from microstock  will give you too much of a wide spectrum of microstockers as the cost of living varies from one part of the world to the other.  What about the guy that makes 75K dollars a year at something else, should we expect him making 75K in microstock as well? What about another one that makes 15K at something else, then the requirement for this particular person would only be 15K?  But then again, perhaps that is the requirements that you want which is fine too.

And then the Diamond group, again we are missing other equally productive microstockers.  As you say it is really tricky to draw a line or how to draw it.

In my case I would not be able to apply in either one of those two groups, however I do believe to be at least as equally productive.  This is why I created this group as I think you would get very productive discussions with microstockers from the top tier.

Xalanx mentioned SS 0.38 per download which would indicate in fact over 30K downloads.  That is another variable that could be used to identify someone, if only those 0.38 cents could be publicly seen.

By totalling downloads from microstock sites that we know, we can easily draw a line that would be equally fair for everybody regardless of where you are from.   Denis

Yeah, i understand what you are saying.  perhaps it is just best to keep the groups how they are.  I wanted to create a group for people who are Dependant on their microstock income for their livelihood which is why i chose the 50% amount.  Even if it is a different amount for different people, it would still 'mean' the same thing to each of them

Of course, and those people dependant on microstock would definetly have a higher priority, be more active and passionate in discussions . Thanks Tyler, you are a true gentleman.

Denis

Regarding the above, in trying to attract the participation of other worthwhile and equally productive microstockers, I added a few more conditions which I hope will help members to join in. Here are those conditions:

To participate you must satisfy one of the four conditions below:

1- Your total downloads from iStock, Fotolia and/or Dreamstime must be over 30,000. This could be a combination of all or any of the three, or

2- Your total downloads from iStock, Fotolia and/or Dreamstime must be over 20,000. This could be a combination of all or any of the three.  And you must have a 1200+ images Shutterstock account with a commission subscription rate of $0.38, or

3- Your total downloads from iStock, Fotolia and/or Dreamstime must be over 10,000. This could be a combination of all or any of the three.  And you must have a 4000+ images Shutterstock account with a commission subscription rate of $0.38, or

4- You are presently an iStock Diamond and became a non-exclusive after Sep 1st, 2010. And you must have your images published with at least one other popular microstock agency.

For approval you must give home links of those sites discussed above to show your credential. As well you must be a non-exclusive.

Below is the link to join in:

I joined.  Will take a proper look when I get more time.  There have been times when it would of been useful to have a more private place to discuss things.  Would be nice if it could all be done here but perhaps this is the best option.

That's OK we can make a group for people, who don't fit into any other group. :D

Not saying it's going to be the same, but when I started with Alamy there was a private group. You had to prove you had something, I can't remember, and then they looked and checked if you were "worthy" to participate in the private group. I waited and qualified and when I got in, I saw it was pretty much the same people writing the same things.

There's a forum on the web where you have to be invited by two current members. Then they charge an annual fee for membership. Some people say they have gotten photo work by belonging, others just join to say they are members. Funny part is the two people I know who are members, are pretty much weekend, fair weather, shooters and probably joined to be part of the club. Oh yes, the forum there isn't any better than the open forums on other photo sites.  ::) So much for elite private groups.

Best reason why it would make sense for the micro professionals is in dealing with agencies and that type of issue. People who work for a living, instead of a hobby shooter like me, have more valid concerns and maybe can pool their efforts to make something positive happen? Maybe a unified voice from people who matter to the agencies, would make sense to them.

Maybe I'll start the "Mad as Hell and I'm not going to take it anymore" group. Membership requires that you have been dropped or have quit at least six agencies because of the way they treat contributors, or have gone out of business, or because the sales were so pitiful that it wasn't worth keeping your work up for sale there anymore. :D

Oh yeah, almost forgot, one for StockXpert/ThinkStock and IS partner program contributors who would like to discuss the sites and sales without a bath in hot oil and human waste being thrown down from the castle walls above, by the elite, well placed MS photographers.  :o

So you are implying that exclusives at IS are mad as hell and not going to take it anymore. Does that mean that 90% of the exclusives at IS have gotten together and decided they are going independent? I doubt it.  ;)

My emphasis was on having quit 6 or more agencies and that the ""Mad as Hell and I'm not going to take it anymore" came before that decision (if not it would certainly kick in by the time they came around to disabling images from DT)... :p

All these groups fit the story of my life; "well qualified but not qualified to join".  I guess I need to wait a couple years to have the sales numbers but then the dividing line will most likely more again.  Then again, in a couple weeks, I will qualify for Leaf's group.

Not all the groups are portfolio related.  There are camera groups, country groups, blog groups, or anything you can think of and create yourself groups.

I just saw someone in another thread suggest a group for people who have been banned from the iStock forums ;)

An anti-social group would work if if there was a strict rule that members weren't allowed to communicate with each other.

Leaf,
I am a bit confused. I didn't make the Zazzlers group private, so does it mean that anything we post there will be seen in everyone's main page? I don't want to clutter the view with something that others aren't interested at. Should I make it private?

I agree the layout isn't totally logical.. but the front page just shares everything that is public.  If people only want to view activity from their friends or their own groups then they can click on 'My Groups' and it will show them only their own groups or 'My Friends' for just their friends posts.

I would suggest keeping the group open.

For those who are interested...

you can now connect your twitter account to your microstock.me account so when you make a twitter post, it will update microstock.me (or vise versa).

To do so, go to: My Account > Settings > Twitter

I like the UK photographers group.  14 of us joined and there's not a single comment.  Can't get much more British than that :)  I was going to break the silence by saying something about the weather but I thought better of it.

LOL! As one of that 14 I must admit I had totally forgotten about Microstock.me. Between actually taking photographs, uploading them, updating my own blog and spending way too much time here at MSG, I just don't know where the time would come from to be active there as well. Still, thanks for reminding me it exists. BTW it rained a bit today here in Hastings ;D Regards, David.

I joined two groups, but I haven't participated much...too busy trying to learn stuff so maybe I can make some money. It's not that I purposely don't post...just can't find the time for one more "social" site. Looks like we are all in the same big boat...the two groups I joined don't have much going on either. Lots of joiners, no talkers.  :D
