Title: Money stolen from moneybookers!!! Pls help!
Post by: Slovenian on September 11, 2011, 10:29
I just logged in to check my balance after seeing usd/euro exchange rated improved and I was planning to withdraw some of the money. Well they stole everything, $1,8k, all card payments (never gave my moneybookers mastercard to anyone) made at the end of last week. I already contacted moneybookers via their contact form, what else can I do? I am supposed to get all of the money back right? I'm just interested to know how long it takes for them to refund lost/stolen funds, they'll undoubtedly investigate things thoroughly.

The worst thing is I'm planning to go to Sicily next Saturday and now all of my money is gone. I just hope this gets resolved before then

OK I called their lost and stolen help line, they're going to look into it and hopefully resolve it in 48h and refund all of my money. I hope everything gets resolved successfully, the good thing is 6/7 card payments were made to the same account (IMO it looks a lot more suspicious).

WOW, what a shock that was seeing the balance of 77$ instead of something around 2k. I can't even pay the bills, much less go to Sicily without that money.

Wow, that's scary, I hope they sort that out soon!

I've just checked my account, all is ok.

I just wonder how those that are earning a few grand a month and are from outside US at the same time (so they have to keep an eye on the exchange rate) handle this. They're obviously not holding their money indefinitely on moneybookers, since they'd loose a (small) fortune if it was breached, so they must be putting their eggs in more baskets. There's payoneer at IS, paypal and cheque at other sites. So mostly internet based ways of getting your money, cheque is the only form of payment, that avoids internet completely. But it also takes forever to get the funds in Europe, at least it was a couple of years ago.

My monthly amounts are small, but I'm not really sure how to proceed in the future, wether I should trust moneybookers, or any e-wallet service for that matter and stick to cheques, which really are inconvenient (you have to go to the bank every single time instead of walking to the nearest ATM), expensive to process and I won't get my money for 2 weeks...

I never leave my money in Paypal, I just cash it as it goes in, both for this reason (could be nicked or your account suspended for no reason etc.) and because it's pretty pointless having your cash sitting there not earning for you, working for these companies while you gamble on the exchange rate increasing in future.

I've never let my money build up in PP or MB.  I withdraw a few times a month.  It feels safer having it in my bank account.

Have you been using a public computer or unencrypted or public wifi ? Or is it possible that you have been the victim of a phishing attack or that there is a keylogger or other trojan on your computer ?

how do you think that your account was breached ?

This sure is a lot safer, although you really do loose a lot if the exchange is bad. The difference between 1,25 and 1,55 is huge in the long run. Of course it's not as black and white since it sometimes takes half a year or even more for the exchange rate to drop to the acceptable level. That being said, from now on I will use your strategy. You're wise. My problem is I'm prone to taking risk, no really big ones, but still. I just hope it was worth my while (meaning that I'll get my money back and withdraw at a favourable exchange rate)

No to all and looking into phishing option. Spybot found nothing, avast is crunching the full system scan and has already found 2 infected files, but I won't know if that's it until the scan is complete.

I've no idea. Moneybookers acc wasn't breached, since the payments weren't made directly from the account, but always using a card. So they got that info from a site (I only payed for plane tickets and that's it) or by some keylogger or I don't know what kind of sw that can get that info while typing it at a site.

Is your wi-fi protected by security key? Is it visible on wireless discovery? Could it be that someone connected to your wi-fi and traced data packets?
Sorry for your trouble, let us know how it goes.

Exactly. Professional ForEx traders don't know how a currency is going to move from one day to the next, let alone weeks or months in advance. If they did ... the price would simply move to that new position. A currency's value at any particular moment reflects the prevailing variables. Unless you think know something that the rest of the market has not already taken into account then it is simply a 50/50 gamble. Might as well choose red or black down the casino. You have the same chance of success and it is much, much quicker.

WEP encrypted, visible. According to that, it's possible, but still highly doubtful, since it would have to be one of my neighbours, since the signal doesn't get all the way down to the ground floor.

I'll report as soon as I get a reply from them.

From now on I'll be the most paranoid withdrawer they ever had ;) . If I get refunded in a normal time frame that is.

Really scary to find that much money missing Slovenian.  Hope it is sorted out quickly and you get your money back.

Can't comment on the exchange rate issue, as I am in US.

Well, it's important for you USasians as well, if dollar is getting stronger, there will be no inflation and it'll also stay world's first currency at least for a while. If it won't you'll have to worry about exchange rates ;) . Here's the exchange rate graph http://www.ecb.int/stats/exchange/eurofxref/html/eurofxref-graph-usd.en.html (http://www.ecb.int/stats/exchange/eurofxref/html/eurofxref-graph-usd.en.html)

I was just reading somewhere a couple of days ago that WEP is old technology, and that WPA or WPA2 is more secure. I don't remember where I was reading, but found this:

Gee, no kidding?!  Thank you Captain Obvious.

Not sure how that relates to your moneybookers balance being stolen?  I'm sure there's some American imperialistic plot at work though... ;)

Tnx for the link. I knew that, but we (my friend who's working in IT) just couldn't set it to WPA, so it was set as WEP. I guess I should have bought a better router :s

Indeed ;D . Lol Lisa, restrain yourself. If I managed to (I really had to try hard so that my last comment didn't go any further). But I guess that exchange rate remark (joke of course) was enough to blow ur short fuse :D

the op says card payments not stolen from moneybooker which could be stolen card number. use card data stolen at store you lose. they say the web is more secure then restaurant gas station or in person where they can scan and steal your information from the card.

I got the money back, there's just one payment pending (that I couldn't even see in my account since it wasn't completed yet), after that is settled, I can apply for a new mastercard and withdraw everything, which I shall. I just can't understand why I must pay 10 EUR again, since it wasn't my fault, but according to them it's not theirs either. Well I don't care about 10 EUR, when I just got 1,3k back. I'm so happy everything resolved well ;D

Because the old one has been breached. Or do you mean why do I need it and not transfer the money to my bank acc?

Well they just stole your money because there was a card for it, give that some thought. I don't think state's revenue agencies will go around diggin up your accounts any soon, they have bigger fish to fry.

Unfortunately that logic doesn't apply in my country. It's the small fish that get fried and the big that get to walk free ;) .

And yes, I will from now on withdraw everything instantly. When I'll get the email from moneybookers confirming a payment, I'll run right to the nearest ATM. The window of opportunity for thieves will be closing almost instantly and there will never be large amounts in my account anyway (unless SS goes crazy, at other sites I'm going to withdraw every time I hit the min amount)
