Title: New subscription services from Apple and Google
Post by: melastmohican on February 16, 2011, 19:16
No it is not for images but mostly for publishing digital content on the web (magazines, blogs, etc). Interesting part is that Apple is taking 30% from sold subscription which seems like opposite of what stock distributors are doing. To make it look even worse Google announced competing service and they take only 10% :-)

Hopefully these services can be adapted to sell other types of digital media :-)

I do wonder if Apple and Google have considered getting in to the stock images market?  If they could do it and pay commissions like this, I think it would soon kill off all the competition.  Most designers seem to love Apple, Google is huge compared to any stock site.

Yeah, i saw a big write up about it yesterday on Gizmodo.  They are making things tough for publishers because a publisher can't offer anything inside the app that a person can follow a link to buy outside the app - basically meaning the publisher can't direct someone to go outside the app and skip the app store commission.  It sounds a lot more involved than that though - I'm just not good at explaining it.  You can read on Gizmodo if you want the full story

Yes and Apple isn't running the app site so someone can get free advertising and free links to sell the same items for less on their own home site. Not too stupid to allow people to freely use the Apple site for marketing and then pay them nothing?

Sounds like good business, not anything nefarious?

I think Gizmodo doesn't get it. There is no free lunch, someone has to pay for it, somehow.

If Getty identifies that there is a threat that Google would start such business they will strike a deal with them to give 10% of our share to Google :-)
