Title: Newspapers and other places that say "Send us your photos"
Post by: PaulieWalnuts on June 07, 2008, 15:44
While I'm on news websites there always seems to be areas where they encourage viewers to submit photos. Magazines have "send us your best photos" contests where the winner gets a few hundred or a few thousand dollars.

I noticed one thing they all seem to have in common. Whatever you submit becomes their property.
One online newspaper looks like they have an online store for selling prints of the images that are submitted. I don't see anywhere showing the submitter gets anything.

So if they collect thousands or tens of thousands of images, what do they do with them? Use them instead of buying stock?

I think there was a thread here, but maybe it was elsewhere, about National Geographic Magazine.  If you submit images to them, even if they are not published they get a lot of rights over it.  They can use it in books, calendars, whatever.  You still own the rights and, as far as I can remember, they don't get exclusivity (but I may be wrong).

I could accept that if an image was published - boy, to be published in NGM! - but I think these terms are unacceptable with unpublished images.  Yet, they get many submissions and some awesome images.
