Title: number of pixels going crazy but?
Post by: stokfoto on September 09, 2008, 13:38
as we know especially with the release of latest cameras (24,6 mp sony a900 ie)number of pixels that dslr's produces increased significantly. But does that make you feel some how your earlier created images with less MPs devaluated  with the introduction of the newer cameras with lots of pixels. lets put it this way do think  your 6 or 8mp (may be even 12mp images will receive less demand)

ok I know it is the quality what matters first but I think there will be some kind of  impact of the pixel counts on  the industry (oh good news is if I get one of those pixel monsters I won't have to interpolate for Alamy anymore:)

Hard to say.  My best selling series of photos was shot with my old crummy 3.2 mp P&S, and they haven't shown any signs of slowing down in almost three years.

In the long run yes probably. It also depends on your subject. I already experience a large percentage of highres sales, since I have more high res images. If for a specific project a high res file is required but you do not have it the customer might look somewhere else. For stock photography the more MP the better especially since at least one search engine of the major Stock engines favours higher res images. I am doing a lot of photoshop and for this high res files are also very convenient. So yes I as stock photographer will look with delight at the megapixel race although I am aware it might not increase the quality.

The computer screen will stay the same for a while actually. Then the whole websites on the net will still need smaller size images I think. The 24mpx will be used on big advertisement board like the ones you see on the highway mostly and then maybe generating more incomes. But we wont see much changes unless we've all become giants in my opinion..

Another interesting point could be that prices of current 12 mpx cameras will drop..:-)

I see your point Karimala,I too have some files that are 4mp and still selling well but I agree with Freezingpictures  the effect would be in the long run.

I see new quality requirements coming from the agencies faster than we can say "megapixel", not so much for more pixels as such, but for clarity and detail in general.

Just as a sidelight to this thread, I'll attempt to translate "megapixels" into film quality.

Your average film, say, 400 ISO, represents 12-14 megapixels on a digital camera.  This does not factor in noise.  Average slide film - 20-24 megapixels, again with no noise factor.  One of my favorite emulsions is Fuji Reala (ISO 100) and I have yet to find a DSLR that can duplicate the quality.  otoh, I shot film for.... uh.... a lotta years........translation:  I'm an old fart.
