Title: Photographer's Portfolio
Post by: Jake on November 21, 2006, 20:46
I sell stock photos online--Probably like you do, except that I'm not a professional, just a hobbyist.  A few of my photos have been used in some significant projects and I'd like to showcase those on both my website and in a physical portfolio.  Because my photos are stock photos, they are more utilitarian than they are artistic.

My question is this.  What should a portfolio contain (both a real one and an online one)?   I also write articles, computer scripts, and songs and I design webpages.  Is it bad to mix all of those things into one portfolio?

I will appreciate very much any responses I get.

Jake I am not an expert, so this is an 'any response'.  Personally, I would be interested in discovering all the facets of your multiple talents.

There was a discussion about it (not here) a few months ago, and the consensus was that for professional photographers it was better to separate the different activities.  The main reason was that the clients would not understand why the stock photos are so cheap compared to the amount they personally charge for other projects, which could be a source for potential bargaining problems.  You also have to consider if your clients would benefit from such diverse presentation.

But if your other activities are hobbies too, then it's a different bargain, and incorporating the multiple activities could be very enriching for everyone involved.
