Got a PS3 for xmas three years ago, one of the first generation ones, 40GB HD. The hard disk failed a few months ago (installing a new one solved it), then a week later the Blu-Ray wouldn't spin up the discs anymore. Had to order a new laser for the disc drive from China - I have never seen such a confusing mechanical contraption as the gears and guts of the Blu-Ray drive, was very lucky to have managed to install the laser without screwing anything else up.
I'm sure the newer generation PS3's are more reliable.. but it was a hit in my love of Sony products.
For the price though, you can't beat the PS3.. a proper standalone drive is generally more expensive and isn't half as useful.
