Okay, I get credit for coining the terms-

"You have been Yahoo-ed" or "Pulling a Yahoo"

Basically, if you don't bring your butt to work you're fired! No more working from home! Orders by the new CEO...

Luckily, I'm the CEO, so I don't have to listen to those orders.  ;D

I used to be a software engineer.  To some extent, I agree that serious engineering work needs to be done by people working together in the same place.  You can do it remotely but everything slows w-a-a-y down unless the engineers know each other very well and are skilled communicators.

But canceling work-at-home agreements with an "all hands on deck" order does nothing in the short run but p!ss people off.

Maybe they don't care.
We've seen some recent examples of that lately, haven't we.

The new celebrity CEO who just issued this order is the same one who took the job,  announced she was pregnant, had the baby, and then had a nursery built next to her office:

http://now.msn.com/marissa-mayer-yahoo-ceo-has-at-work-nursery-for-her-baby

She's going to be one of the biggest mistakes the Yahoo board has made - and that's saying something.  She'll be gone in a year, with a golden parachute the size of Kansas.

Short this stock.

Have seen this so many times. With that attitude you get the buds at the work, but the heads are very far from there (many of them usually in the paper's job vacancies section).

Agreed.  Cancelling this sort of thing arbitrarily just to make a name for yourself is only going to lower morale, and thus productivity.

I do think that for a lot of work you definitely need to be in the office for, but other things such as coding or documentation, you need to have peace and quiet and the space to really concentrate.  I work in IT myself and some days open plan offices are just too noisy, or too full of interruption, to really knuckle down.  Unless the office has designated quiet spaces for people to concentrate in then overall this will hurt Yahoo.

Not to mention the hypocrisy of her being able to afford to build a nursery by her office.  I'd be more impressed if she built creches next to all Yahoo offices so all of her employees had that option also.

That is sooooo true.  I always had to do the really hard stuff at home.  And of course all the Yahoo employees who now have to start coming to the office will be given the worst cubicles, the ones that nobody wanted.  When you announce a policy change like this, you're really just asking those people to leave.  You know they're going to be unhappy and unproductive, and this is just a way to get rid of them without having to pay severance.
