Since many of you are bored, I thought we could have a little competition.

How about we create out best pseudo email scam letter and put it up for critique by the other members and visitors.

So we need some rules.

1. Email scam must be limited to the following subjects: (a) Former Ministry of Finance has hidden gold, (b) your uncle owns oil wells there,(c) reader has inherited $32million USD from a ex-patriot who lived in Nigeria and has been killed by rebels.
2. No other rules

Get to it.

Okay, I'm in.  I get this stuff at least 4 times a week.  If I'd known we were having a contest, I wouldn't have "junked" all of them. Not to worry - I'll fish a good one out of my junk file!   ;D

how's these related to me by someone working at the pub.

1) the mother from "geneva" has a son and wants him out of the house while she and her husband are having marital problems. will pay a private tutor to baby sit him in another country. that tutor must also pick him up at the airport, etc.
asks for bank account of the tutor so she can send her the money right away.

2) this one  is not by email, it was from someone who worked in relay ie. deaf people communications.
she said she receives call from these scammer every day. the whole dept is flooded with calls from them, sounds like they have their own call center.
they call pretending to be deaf, and wants to order something.

here's the winner of them all. one call was to the cancer society. they were told it was the cancer society. respond: so what do you sell. we want to buy from you.
another winner: called to buy large volumes of encyclopedias. was told this was a lingerie store. oh, ok, what lingerie do you stock. i want to buy 500 dollars worth.

do i win? what's the prize?  ;D ;D ;D

oh, i forgot another one.
another client told me about Reader's Digest
sending you letter with registered mail fake to say you won a million bucks
and you can stay in Ottawa for the weekend to collect your million dollar.
even say a limo will come to your home to drive to you the airport.

if this is not the biggest scam since nigerian scam, it's the biggest "legal SPAM"
ever in the history of marketing.
the problem is the fraud dept or Better Business Bureau don't care to do anything
if you call to complain.
talk about licking someone's a###.

toothless law in the country. that's why so many fraud cases are growing here.

This 'client' has been drinking the Kool Aid because I have a reader's digest subscription and I dont get any of that.

I don't know many scam letters but I did have people from Africa try to contact me when I was an assistant putting together a conference in Toronto.  They wanted to sign up because 'they wanted to learn finance' but we just told them to get proper VISAs and ignored the e-mails.  Never showed up.  Looks like that could have been a very interesting scam (and/or way to get into the country).

People will try anything.  You really have to keep your guard up
