Title: Recommend a movie (2011/2012 if possible)
Post by: wut on June 03, 2012, 09:06
I do watch a lot of movies, especially lately, because the weather is just so bad and unpredictable, that I can't shoot as much as I'd want to and consequently I don't have any images to retouch etc.

I find it hard to find a good movie lately, H-wood seems to be unable to produce anything good in the last couple of years, mostly just stupid comic book hero movies and cheesy romantic comedies (but TV shows are still really great, I absolutely loved the last season of Californication, Breaking bad, true blood was pretty good as well and also the event). So I've watched a lot of French and Spanish movies. I particularly liked quite a few French movies, but this one really came out on top, it's so positive (although the main character is quadriplegic), it really makes your day, makes you laugh and feel good. Just an awesome movie, about how a person can brighten up someone's life and that someone has lost everything but his wealth. Here it is, Intouchables http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1675434/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1675434/) .

Please, recommend some yourselves ;)

Yup, very good, make sure you watch "Little white Lies" too.

Pff, I've seen so many lately I don't know what to recommend anymore mate but "The Artist" was pretty * good and something completely different, a feast for eyes and ears ;)

Take care Wutski

Wim, I'll definitely take a look, they both look interesting.

Zeus, yes, I've seen it, definitely one of my fav movies of all time. It really charges you with a great dose of optimism, positivity and puts you in a great mood. It makes you realize how bitter and serious we westerners really are, restrained.

Hunger Games is surprisingly good with a second layer of meaning that is very interesting. Recommended.
Dark Shadows, usual Tim Burton and Johnny Depp gothic movie, good as usual.

I kind of feel the same way Wut, that the box office is pushing trash. Best I've seen this year has been Up In The Air with George Clooney. Little bit of romance but it doesn't reek of it. I tend more to like action stuff like Die Hard and the Bourne series. I also like lawyer stuff. There was an early Matt Damon film where he played a lawyer called The Rainmaker. It also has Danny DeVito if you can believe that he added a very good comedic twist to the otherwise serious movie. Rainmaker is in my top ten list of favorite films.

You might like Lincoln layer then. Or a classic runaway jury. I watched up in the air and will give rainmaker a try (although I generally don't like lawyer stuff). Take a look at margin call, it really shows why we're in recession (and it's not a documentary, that's the best thing about it, there's just so much documentaries I can take before I feel like my head will explode) and you can relate it to ms on so many levels too :o . When it comes to action moves, Jason Statham is featured in many of them, for instance the bank job is one of his latest and pretty good. My fav is lock stock and two smoking barrels, again, so refreshing, if you take a break from H-wood. A classic. Snatch is similar, most like it more, but not me. Still very good, of course.

I think Rainmaker hit a chord with me for this reason - many think that when students get out of school and pass the bar, they move into swanky houses or apartments and are set for life. My cousin got out of law school and the only job she could get before passing the bar was working at a chain department store while driving her 10 yr old Chevy. Clerking for judges or even doing duty at a firm is very political here so in order to do that you need family and political connections. In the Rainmaker movie, Damon moves into a garage apartment at a house owned by a little old lady and mows the lawn for her. He winds up with a partnership of sorts with DeVito and grows up pretty quickly. I don't know if Rain even ever made the theatres. I found it on videotape for 5 bucks at one of the discount stores.

I will check out the titles you mentioned.  Thanks!

Well that's the norm for Asian, non-Bollywood movies (just like dancing is for Bollywood). I like the explicit shots, great photography usually, it's just that the stories are usually too longwinded and weird in a way, I guess I don't really get them. So I don't like Asian movies generally, But there are a few exceptions, like Chocolate, Old boy and IP man.

Amazing photography again, great action shots, just like in old boy, a bit less brutal, at least no scenes of pulling out teeth with a hammer or cutting own tongues. Girl who can mimic martial arts, some truly amazing scenes Chocolate Trailer || HD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoccbDV5NOI#ws)

And one of the best fight scenes ever, IP man, this one really gives me goose bumps Ip Man Incredible Wing Chun Kung Fu Fight Scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIhfoX-dfQ8#ws)

I like the Hollywood blockbusters. I think it's cool that comics and cartoons are mainstream now.  ;D

As far as recommendations: If you haven't seen In Bruges, you'd probably like that. Obviously, it's hard to go wrong with any of the HBO series stuff. I just watched Generation Kill and that was pretty good. As far as my favorite Statham movies, I'd probably have to go with the Crank series (because they are insanely stupid).

I bet you do ;)

I have. I'll check generation kill, although I'm a bit sick&tired of this Iraq stuff (I watched a bunch of movies and documentaries and some movies were from the first gulf war, it's a popular subject in H-wood). Crank is pretty good, well the second one is a bit pale and unoriginal.

Dark Shadows was very dissapointing.. the argument is weak in my opinion, the make up, direction, photography, wardrobe are quite interesting, I was hoping for a lot more..

I'm watching it right now, such a feel good movie, really puts you in a great mood and relaxes you. Just like Intouchables. Or 3 idiots. All izz well ;D

French really can make great movies, they're really surprising me lately.

Yeah, since Amelie every now and then a simply great movie pops up from France. I love their different way of designing stories and acting. It always seems to be fresh and surprising. "Hors de Prix" too is a funny, classic, little love comedy (beware, womans movie!)

Another recommendation I can make (although it is not a new movie) is "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring":
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0374546/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0374546/)

Again from Asia, but with a very different approach. Ver calm, no violence....a pure buddhist story which transmitted lots of the buddhist Ideas to me and made me contemplate...

I'm with Cory.  In Bruges is a great movie.

My all time favorite movie is an Irish film hardly anyone has heard of.  In the US it is called "Rory O'Shea Was Here".  In Britain it was released as "Inside I'm Dancing".  This movie is both extremely funny and terribly poignant.  Stars James McAvoy and Romola Garai.

Any of Ewan McGregor's early stuff is brilliant.  Shallow Grave and Trainspotting are must-sees.

Wish I could come up with something from 2011-12.  I agree most recent movies from Hollywood have been cr@p.

"KILL THE IRISHMAN" thehe

Irish flick with Farell? then I would prefer "Ondine".
And while we're talking about McGregor, check m both out in "Cassandra's Dream" where Farell is more paranoid then ever.

Alright a few more 2011/2012, I'm avoiding flicks like "Drive", "Warrior" and "Haywire" because they are borderline but I still liked them.

- A Dangerous Method
- Shame (for you Lisa, you'll understand why within the first few minutes)
- A Separation
- Another Earth
- Rundskop (Bullhead)
- Guilty
- Headhunters (not for the weak stomack)
- Limitless
- My Week with Marilyn
- Perfect Sense
- Nobody Else But You
- Sleep Tight
- The Flowers of War
- The Guard
- The Last Lions
- The Rum Diary
- This Must Be The Place
- Tyrannosaur
- War Horse
- Water For Elephants

There, I hope at least one of these can entertain someone here, enjoyl!

One of my all time favorites has to be "Enter The Void" but you'll have to be very open minded, if you are, prepare for one big trip.
If you are into fractals (I've seen quite a few in stock) then do not even hesitate to watch this!

Take care

I'll second you on My Week with Marilyn, and Cassandra.  I haven't seen the others, but Shame and Kill the Irishman are both in my Netflix queue already. Now you've piqued my curiosity about Shame, so I'll bump it to the top :)

Speaking of Kill the Irishman, Ray Stevenson, its star, also stars in the TV series ROME, with Kevin McKidd, which is EXCELLENT.

If you 2 like this type of movies, that I'd recommend the figher (2010), a bit more of a drama, but one of the best IMO. And since we're talking about a Christian Bale movie, I really liked the machinist, dark drama, he lost dozens of kg just for that role (500 kcal/day), didn't want to use make up, lighting, editing to make him look thinner since it wouldn't be that authentic, nor his state of mind would be right (I couldn't agree more). He even collapsed a few times during the filming, due to exhaustion and malnutrition, his energy levels were just too low at times. His acting was brilliant in that movie. Another piece of great acting by him was in harsh times.

Another special one from Caspar Noe...just watched it yesterday.
As you may know, Caspar Noe is not very light stuff. His toughest movie was "Irreversible" with a 10 min. violation scene with Monica Belluci which was quite shocking. 200 people left the theater in Cannes when the Movie was presented.

However, the new one is "Enter the Void". It deals with dying, life after death, DMT (a strong psychedelic) and the story follows the Tibetan book of the dead. Heavy stuff and not for everyone.

I saw this movie awhile back so not new at all. Couldnt finish the movie as i couldnt really get into it but i loved the crazy intro to this movie. So did Kanye West, since he totally copied it. or should i say hype williams the director for the video.

Kanye West - All Of The Lights ft. Rihanna, Kid Cudi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAfFfqiYLp0#ws) video goto middle of video

On a different note, im curious how much everyone pays for a movie ticket at a theatre in their country. I pay around $15 for a standard film and $18 for an imax 3d film. nyc

Not too many comedies represented in this thread.

So here's my favorite comedy of the last 10 years or so:  In the Loop.

Side-splitting, very sharp and intelligent tale of government hawks in the UK and US conspiring to make the case to go to war in Iraq... probably not too far at all from the truth.  Peter Capaldi is amazing in this... one of the best comedic performances I've ever seen.  He needs to be in more stuff, at least in things people can see outside the UK.

If you see it and like it, check out episodes of The Thick of It, the UK series that preceded the film.  They're available on YouTube (last I checked) and are equally fantastic.

The best beatdown scene I've ever seen. One really has to watch non-Hollywood movies to see something different, fresh, to experience great photography, not just a ton of meaningless special effects (notice how putting a bullet in a car always sets off a huge explosion lol, absurd really). Decent movie too

Another similar drama, though this one is happening in a single room for the whole time. Great dialogues and acting, Tommy Lee Jones surprised me. IMO it's better than the man from earth http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1510938/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1510938/)

If you want something light and a bit of a laugh, watch City Island if you haven't already.  It's about a dysfunctional family.  It's not a movie I'd typically go out of my way to watch but it was worthwhile.

Superb movie, a lot of laugh in my case :)

I like it I think because it is sort of a verbal chess game. Sci-fi without special effects. Kind of like a Sci-fi story around a campfire. Simplistic but intriguing. I think thats what kept me interested the whole time.. then there is the ending.

Nope.  Just didn't get around to making the post.

I think you have a decade or two on me Warren.  I suspect the issue of dementia is weighing more heavily on your mind than mine :)

How about some food movies? The Big Night (1996). And, of course, Chocolat.

Wut,

A rather late response here, but I have seen The Fighter and it is great. I also saw The Machinist and it is one of my favorite all time movies. Another lesser known Bale movie that I really liked is The Prestige. But I watch everything he is in and he is always very good.

Hugo is another 2011 movie I thought was very good.

Me to, I was impressed with his movies (not always his acting) and went through the list of his movies and watched most of them. Great stuff in most cases, not many actors get a chance to star in so many great movies

And to think Wahlberg was the lead actor in the Fighter, though still a good actor he was blown away by Bale's performance ;)

A really excellent Bale movie is Velvet Goldmine.  Also stars Ewan McGregor and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, with Eddie Izzard thrown in for good measure.

It's about the glam rock era of the early 1970s and has some really excellent music.  Seems loosely based on Bowie and Iggy Pop, with the names changed to protect the (not so) innocent.

Warning - Don't watch if you are extremely homophobic.

Headhunters, Norwegian crime/thriller. I found some of the moves at first predictable (I actually guessed exactly what's going to happen), but it becomes quite a bit more complicated after that. Overall a good movie, I'd rate it 7,5/10, just like IMDB did it (it's a very high rank for them) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1614989/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1614989/)

With Jared Leto, reminds me of "Requiem of a Dream"

I will check it out, thanks mate.

I've watched requiem for a dream 15 years ago, but I think it's the same kind of movie, it gives you a feeling that the screenplay writer, if not most of the crew, were on some heavy drugs, probably hallucinogenic too :)

just saw a movie I was wanting to see for a long time and it is pretty amazing, glad I remembered of it today!

its a great story (based in a real one), very interesting movie about the life of a quadriplegic that hires a "crazy" man to help him 24h a day, its a lot of fun but it doesn´t let the fun get into the story, its a beautiful movie, stunning music too in the right moments, I am sure it won´t dissapoint you guys, guess the imdb rate does speak for it this time but not always, I am more fan of rottentomatoes

The Intouchables!

Louis-san, I'm going to slap you silly for not reading the OP's post! if the post was midway then sure, I would understand.
This was the first movie mentioned in this thread.

Or are we starting over? in that case make sure you also see "little white lies"  ::)

Here is a 2009 movie I caught on netflix. Very thought provoking I thought.

The Man from Earth: An impromptu goodbye party for Professor John Oldman becomes a mysterious interrogation after the retiring scholar reveals to his colleagues he is an immortal who has walked the earth for 14,000 years.

I love how the audio was done for this scene.

Best movie of all time...in my opinion is "Last of the Mohicans"  If you love photography you'd love the beauty of the scenes. It's filmed in mountain region of North Carolina and after I went to this area I feel in love with it and try to go back camping every year. If you've never seen it I highly recommend it. You can see it on Netflix...;)

I saw Prometheus at the weekend.

Technically very proficient, but in every other respect very confused, no sensible plot, little characterization and generally gave me the impression of having been produced by people whose main interest is video games and special effects.

Just my opinion though.  Others seem to like it.

Yes, there are plenty of plot holes and some silly scenes. I think some answers purposely left unanswered.

Visuals were fantastic and "David" the android put on a stellar performance.

All in all I enjoyed it and it leaves you with thought provoking questions.
