David Byrne: 'The internet will suck all creative content out of the world'
The boom in digital streaming may generate profits for record labels and free content for consumers, but it spells disaster for today's artists across the creative industries

Sounds so much like microstock

...The amounts these services pay per stream is miniscule their idea being that if enough people use the service those tiny grains of sand will pile up. Domination and ubiquity are therefore to be encouraged. We should readjust our values because in the web-based world we are told that monopoly is good for us. The major record labels usually siphon off most of this income, and then they dribble about 15-20% of what's left down to their artists. Indie labels are often a lot fairer sometimes sharing the income 50/50...

It does indeed sound very microstock-ish. You've got the big companies bleeding the artists dry and the indie companies who offer better deals but struggle to develop enough sales to make those higher percentages pay off.

That sounds familiar.

Before they broke up earlier this year, Grammy Award winners The Civil Wars eschewed record companies completely and did it on their own. Every CD or MP3 they sold, that was their money and they kept it. I remember them saying how incredible it was to go on tour and actually have it be profitable (most bands lose money on tour, but do it to spur additional CD sales).

Interesting coalition that's forming out of this mess, the Content Creators Coalition. It's a group of creators of all sorts of content and includes recording artists, songwriters, journalists, filmmakers, producers, photographers, visual artists, and performers.

I'm signing up to find out more.

Take a look at the comments after the article. Incredibly sad. There are so many posters claiming that Byrne is just whining, and that artists are fat cats. One of the first posters actually suggests that it is better for society if art is done for hobby and without compensation.

I confronted my son last week because he was listening to a rap album. I had no problem with the content, even if it wasn't "my thing". My question was, where did you get the album, because we sure didn't buy it for you? He got it from a friend, who downloaded it from some site where it was posted illegally. Sigh.

It's a Free For All. Take anything what you want.

very interesting article, at this moment many artists (musicians) would be "zero" without the internet, like everything in life there are positives and negatives, its all about finding the right balance and be happy with it

same thing with microstock or any other job in the world but as we know microstock would be impossible without internet, can it suck all creative content? sure! nothing we can do beside adapting and never stop looking for other photography work if you need that extra satisfaction

still sad or not enough to pay the bills? time to get a different job!

on the latest years (perhaps a decade or more) musicians keep on talking about selling less and less CDs but when they are good enough there is no doubt that we will pay to watch their gigs, that is their advantage, fans want to sing with them and nothing beats that, so that is their income, its not selling CDs, anyway artists are still selling a ton of cds, dvds and merchandising, I still buy them!

Almost every new band I've found in the last 15 years I have found through the internet, with a few more being found through XM/Sirius. The spread of ideas and art is undeniably a wonderful thing. But theft is theft.

Times and technology change - I remember the warnings that home taping was killing music. The Microstock Industry wouldn't exist without the internet. Not sure where its all going but its not gonna stop changing.

Well, as we all know: "It (always) was better before"

Internet has only changed the way to do it.

We can and have to change that. Build your own site. Join symbiostock. Find new ways to generate royalties. Stop whining: yes, we make a difference. And even if a change of my behaviour does not make any difference to the industry it made a big one to me. People selling themselves out because "we can`t change anything" suffer IMHO from a complete loss of self respect.

I, for my part, produce more and more content for different channels, with varying results - but man, it feels good.

^^ Feeling good is important, but bear in mind that some have families to feed, so it isn't so easy for them.

How do you make the transition from "I'll give away anything to get noticed" to "Sorry, now you have to pay for my music"?
amen to that. this is the ongoing problem in our industry.

The current model is almost a guarantee that you won`t be able to feed your family for much longer with microstock. Transition is painful. You have the choice to "get transitioned" by a collapsing market or to transform your business yourself into a more sustainable model.

The only thing you can do without changing the strategy is feeding the beast until it is full and finally vomits all over...
