I just read about this! Geez, what were these people thinking? Obviously, they weren't! I can't say that I was as offended as the woman they quoted in the article, but it sure was in poor taste.

Nothing special, just keep shooting you B-role models...

The slogan is misguided, but the design looks nice. :D
I have to say, I think it's kind of funny, in a sick way. But then I have a sick sense of humor. But I can certainly see where people would be offended.

I like the design, too. Maybe they could salvage it all by changing the slogan.

The sicker the humor, the more focused your audience needs to be - a billboard just isn't the place for something that dark. Not to mention the rather weak connection between a restaurant and a religious cult. So I think it misses on two levels.
We're like xxx with better drinks is a good idea, but it needs to be some reference that doesn't involve mass suicide.

It's a good thing they didn't have something that looked like grape Kool-Aid instead of that daiquiri-looking drink. That would have been really bad!

I admit I laughed. I think it's partly how brazen the ad is, and frankly I'm shocked a restaurant in the US would be bold enough to couple that type of "religious" reference with humour. Americans seem to really like their religion so that's a pretty funny ad considering. but in poor taste and that kind of humour is too easy, ultimately it doesn't require any wit.

A few years ago a flower company had a billboard campaign here. In big bold letters, "For great sex call 1800FLOWERS"
I believe one or two old biddies complained and they had to take them down, but by that time it was too late - the message had got out there :)
While checking my spelling I doscovered biddy is not always defined as "an old lady" in different countries - but that's how its defined here.

A major grocery story chain in Georgia had a billboard for a couple hours; located at the intersection of I-75 and I-85 (major traffic area) that showed a big juicy steak and the message is big letters "You can't beat our meat". it did not last long either but it was funny.

I don't think most people in many countries would understand the double meaning!

OMG!! That one should win a prize!
A few years ago a company that sells analgesic pain rub had commercials (I think they were shown nationally) that sang "You bet your Asspercreme". They later changed them to "you bet if it's Aspercreme". We really miss the old ones. ;D
