Title: Tennessee law bans posting images that "cause emotional distress"
Post by: Slovenian on June 16, 2011, 09:06
This is beyond absurd http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2011/06/tenn-law-bans-posting-images-that-cause-emotional-distress.ars (http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2011/06/tenn-law-bans-posting-images-that-cause-emotional-distress.ars).

So what could that mean for us? No Tennessee buyers of "problematic" photos?

your screename is offensive ;D hahah kidding.
on the other hand, if my screen name was American, it would offend people in here  ;)

Kidding aside, I saw Jackass 3d a couple of months ago and altho i was laughing my ass off at times, some scenes really wanted to make me throw up. There is a limit to me what should be shown and what shouldnt. After a certain point, it doesnt do the mind any good to have certain things swirling around and rotting inside it. Just my point of view.

I think that will be the end of imagery in Tennessee. I can hardly think of an image that wouldn't cause someone somewhere some sort of emotional distress, even a 'pretty flower' to someone with severe hay fever.

Indeed, imagine a photo of Obama on the news during a tea party meet, that could cause 'em some serious trauma :D . No more democratic posters before the elections! Hell, they almost killed the Top gear crew for putting Vote for Hillary on their car (I believe it was in Arkansas).

OTOH you have a state (Michigan if I remember correctly) passing the law that enables children of less than 10 years to carry weapons. W-T-F ??? Do they really want to strengthen their first place in school shootouts? OK off topic, but while we are on the subject of insane laws being passed I mentioned it.

I'm sure any hint of sexuality (like a woman in a bikini or even showing her cleavage) could cause some puritan emotional distress. How could a dentist with one of his tools in his hand promote his clinic etc. It can all be distressing.

Jeeeeeez. I live in Tennessee too.  ::)

Would this cover Editorial? If so... the News stations are causing me distress by showing images of companies closing their doors around here. Don't want to see stories about Damaging Storms either.

Maybe it's a make-work program. There might be a lot of unemployed judges and bailiffs in Tennessee and now they can be busy hearing offensive image cases 8 hours a day until they retire.

there's always something entertaining coming from the land of the free, where they handcuffed a 9 year old boy for lifting the skirt of 6 year old girl, aka sexual harrasment 8 )

In England, males over the age of 14 must practice with the longbow for 2 hours a day. In France, it's illegal to name a pig Napoleon. There are stupid and crazy laws all over the world. The law in Tennessee is clearly an infringement of first amendment rights. Local politicians love to pander and showboat, a human condition without borders.

More nanny state society run amuck. Don't worry too much about this law. The law is written too broad and will not stand-up upon appeal and will be struck down. I suspect a court case is coming quickly to determine the strength and reach of this law.

A word to Tennessee, "You are in over your head and above your pay grade."

in George Orwell's Animal Farm, the dictator pig is named Napoleon
