Funny, almost all my 'Gems' have occurred unplanned.  My best so far is one of our front yard- while taking out the garbage at 6 am on a lovely summer morning I realized how nice it looked and the lighting was perfect thus I ran back inside and get my camera and tripod. The entire session took probably 5 minutes or less and that image has gone on to sell like hot cakes!

Just weird that I cannot predict when I am shooting a 'Gem'- often I've thought I had a gem only to have the image to not even sell! At least for me I cannot predict a 'Gem'... 8)

good point. i have several gems, and they too found themselves.
zero cost. actually, one was even not pleasant for me, but it ended up earning a lot of regular money for me. almost like saying, "sorry i f***ed up your life, now i pay you back for doing that by giving you passive income compensation for the rest of your bleeding life!!!"

still, my favourite gems is food. i already got paid when i eat them after shooting them in-studio.
i think it was you who said, i am fatter or whatever since 2005, ... well same here !!!
oops, time to go on my daily workout ... jog jog jog.. ooh, who 's that good looking gal jogging my way??? .. bye goofy, got to catch me a rich wife  ;)

p.s.
good idea, "hot cakes"... isolated hot cakes might just sell like hot cakes too

I love shooting food as well- good right off and you get to eat it!  Just not to successful on food shots - I wish I was a food stylist at times!

Now I better get back work before my rich wife dumps my butt out on the street!

O Senor Goofy,
i wish i can tell u i m a food stylist n all that. but really, the ones with all the styling, bubbles and smoke, and drinking straw , spray, oil,etc... which took a lot more time to create...
do not make as much money as the isolated "gems".
plop them on a frosted glass, lit from the bottom, lit overhead, and gobos to shade.
those pay for my wine, not the "stylist-ic" shots.
as i said, zero cost.

plus you can eat or drink them. The food stylist use fake (often poisonous) stuff in them as well...

yes, old school tricks. similar to the cruel freezing the insect before shooting them in the studio.
lots of cruel and poisonous (spraying oil to make bubbles, etc) techniques were used. i m sure they still do it today...
in some countries , these have been prohibited, but not everywhere.

and no, i wouldn't eat those stuff they shoot. but i shoot mine just as soon as i bring them home from the market.  shoot quickly, then i  eat em

I have a shot of some agave nectar running off a spoon with an isolated background. The * thing has sold so many times and is all over the web on some notable sites. I shot it off hand, unplanned, and was sure it would never sell. It has on 4 agencies now and on shutter stock, it is one of the highest selling images I have.....

Go figure, right?

Depends on the stylist. We will not use anything that isn't edible on a shot here.

my funniest one was a trout that I shot and got my fishy hands all over the camera! That particular image has done so well! But I hate to shoot raw fish again!
