Have you found any good / really useful iphone or touch applications?

I have tested a few but none really stand out some supper applications.
Or well, Tap Tap Revenge was pretty fun for a time killer, and AccuFuel seems like it might be a good gas milage tracker.

Any other good finds?

I think that the best has still to come indeed

I've however found some of them which are quite useful and/or very well done:

- Starmap: for amateur astronomers, quite impressive albeit a little slow
- Teleport: a VNC client which works very well and could be extremely useful (e.g. to check or start my 3D renders at work)
- Shazam: cool one
- VisualRadio: a little crash-prone, but good radio selection in Switzerland even if I don't listen radio often
- Listomni: the best to-do/shopping list application yet?
- Locly: a look at the future of services based on geolocalisation. A lot of room for improvement,but promising.
- Remote: to listen to your iTunes music at home
- SimplifyMedia: to listen to your iTunes music and the music of your friends wherever you are
- Exposure: if you have a Flickr account
- SplashID: good secret storage app
- NetNewsWire: all RSS feeds in your iPhone

I would say it is a good start 1 month after AppStore opening, but I guess the "serious" appllications will come later.

how do you find SimplifyMedia? is it usefull? have you tried connecting to friends? I guess both people have to be online then right? I wonder, does it take up lots of bandwith streaming music over to a friend?

and just downloaded - Shazam - yeah, very cool. I think i will find it very usefull - i wonder lots of times what a certain song is.

And i agree i think there is TONS of potential uses for applications, and the fact that it is open to everyone really offers a huge potential developing network. I think the app store is what is going to really make iphone popular -( unless the google app store becomes more popular ) Because the default possibilities of the iphone are surprisingly limiting- no video, small camera, no mms, no memory card, no changing of the battery, etc. etc. I am frustrated with apple lots of times that they make things so 'easy' to use that they remove useful functionality. ok.. i don't want to turn this into a pro or anti mac thread so i will stop... if it turns into that, i will split the thread into 2 threads.

Best app for mindless entertainment during boring conference calls: JirboBreak

Fun app with potential to come in handy some day: myLite (especially clever is the "rock concert" setting)

I've been told to check out Pandora too, but loading it is as far as I"ve gotten

Still a newbie with my ipod touch... what does these applications or what you can do with?

Leaf I also find these apple products are made too easy and automatic. I would like to have more settings some time... nothing more lol

Simplify Media (two words)... available here on swiss store.

I don't have tried to share my library yet, but I can access mine. My network monitoring app tell me that streaming is done at 48kb/s.

It allow to access yout music library which is on your computer at home, not the one on your iPhone. And your computer need to be running indeed (not in sleep mode) and the "server" app must be running too.

Both can be popular: there is room for several successful platform I think.

I'm afraid I don't fully agree even if you are definitively not completely wrong

The default are the current default: new features will come through applications (Apple or thrid party) or OS upgrades: video and MMS could probably be part of them. But my feeling concerning MMS is that Apple decided not to make it available on purpose: the future is e-mail and Apple rarely make any compromise when they think that a technology is obsolete (remember first iMac without a floppy disk?). I almost never use MMS myself anyway.

The "small" camera seems quite sufficient to me: I'm not sure a 5MP camera on such tiny captor would be really better... this is just plain marketing crap

Memory card? Why not, but 16GB is quite a bit of storage for such a device I think. And remember that with wi-fi/3G, it should not be that complicated to make an application which allow to access some network storage: 32GB on your iPhone or 1TB with all your photos or movies on a network storage accessible from everywhere?

Removable battery: the battery is easily removable on the 3G iPhone (not soldered), but there are indeed some screws to remove and it is not intended to be changed often. But why would you need to change your battery that often?

Remember that industrial design put some constraints: I guess that the iPhone would not be so thin with a removable battery.

And remember also that this is just the begining of a new range of products for Apple.

Browse the AppStore on iTunes and you will see that it may be interesting to upgrade your firmware to 2.0 and start adding some features to your iPod Touch! In one month, 2000 applications have been made available and every days many more are coming.

Apple products are the most planned and carefully designed you will find in the technology industry IMHO. You may of course not agree with Apple choices, but be certain that these choices have been made carefully and take into account many aspects we don't even think about.

A good example: one of the reason (the only reason?) the MacBook Air do not have an ethernet port is that this port is physically too big and was incompatible with such a thin desing. There are patent from Apple describing some sort of collapsable ethernet ports: Apple engineers tried to find a way to add an ethernet port to the MacBook Air but without success. They have to make a choice and they decided to make no compromise on the design.

I have been using "Scanner911" for a few weeks. It's an app for U.S. people that allows you to listen to thousands of police scanners around the country. I had it on my iPod, but could only use it at home or where there was free WiFi. Now that I've upgraded to an iPhone, I can use it in the car.

At 99 cents, it's cheaper than buying a $100 portable scanner.

I've also been using an app called "dSLR Toolkit for Dummies" which has a nice DoF calculator and a great utility for helping you find manual camera settings for different situations. Just select the type of shot (action, portrait, fireworks, etc...) and the lighting conditions (day, night, indoor, etc..) and it will give you suggestions for ISO, shutter speed, F stop, etc.. For a noob like me, it's fantastic.

if you are contributing to IS, you should check the i$tock contributor app: http://itunes.apple.com/de/app/i-tock-contributor-application/id298053056?mt=8 - it gives you information about your account there: Balance, files, latest downloads, latest approvals plus it has integrated Access to the iStock contributor charts (http://www.istockcharts.de), very useful tool!
