So I get an email today from a long time friend. It reads like this:

"Weird happening just now .... I was given a link to some aerial pictures of Vancouver for a poster I am designing  - conference in May.   And who owns the pictures ??  A Peter Chigmaroff.   Gosh .... got any good ones  - that are free of course - pointing from UBC to downtown?"

So they want FREE aerial images. That area is in close proximity to YVR so would require a helicopter and lots of planning and they want free. I know they have a large budget for travel and hosting and they want free. I am boiling mad at this one.

Don't blame you. That's just messed up.

A quick search on his name gave several results, none for free, none arial images.

I'm assuming that "Peter" is the Peter up above (Zeus).

Tell him Yes.. if he hires the plane / Heli and pilot and lets you keep the copyright to all the shots take for whatever use you want. See what he thinks of that.

For what it's worth, today I had a sale thanks to Flickr.

The buyer found my photo on Flickr then searched my portfolios on agency websites, couldn't find it (because full-res of that photo wouldn't have been accepted anywhere) and contacted me directly. 
Because it is a non-profit site I asked for 20,00 € for an RF license and the buyer had no problem with that (30 € would have probably been fine too). The photo on Flickr is ca. 800 px wide and with no watermark.

Lately I notice how hard and difficult have been made the nature documentaries at television. I try to get a view on the budget of those docus. The scientist and naturalist give part of their lifes sometimes to make 2 hours of television.

Still most people listen to this while making dinner and laugh at the face the monkey is doing

Yes, but there would also be a creative fee on top of this. The above is just expenses. I mean that's the way it usually is.

Yours was a friend, who might have expected some sort of favour (though not as it was for his business, maybe for a photo for the wall).
A former colleague's brother also shoots aerials and gets a few emails each month (fromj non-buyers) asking  him to remove the watermark from the pics on his website - sometimes really unpleasantly: "How am I supposed to use this with your watermark all over it?" was one question from someone wishing just to 'lift' the photo for free.
And he wasn't even selling them royalty free.
(When I taught, I was always looking for 'free images' to use in the classroom on the smartboard. At first, when I didn't know about RF, I used to wonder why there were big watermarks on photos that 'didn't charge a royalty' after all, they showed up on search for 'free photos' or 'free images')
