The new 30D is here.  I ran it through its paces--clean sensor, ready to shoot!

Look out world.

I'm using my existing lenses that I used with my 10D (lovely camera, better body than the 30D--but slow and developing permanent hot pixels).  I have a Sigma 24-70 2.8 DG and a Canon 70-200 f4l.  These two lenses cover much of what I need for both landscape and portrait photos.  My future lens plans (when I win the lottery or some rich relative I didn't know about dies) include the 100-400 l from Canon and something like the Tokina 12-24 f4.

I'm now printing on the HP9180--a big selling point for my portraiture business--and have a very minimal Alien Bees setup (an AB800, umbrella, and homemade light tent), along with the 580EX flash.

Crimminy, I've spent a mint on this stuff and I still have more to go.  What fun!

What is everyone else around here using?

which lens came with it?

You shouldn't be jealous.  You're a very good photographer (we scientific types learn technology quickly, don't we?  ::)).

I picked up the camera because it's only $1000 US with the current rebate.  It just barely fit my budget--I've been doing some contract research work to pay for it.  I bought it from Beach Camera; I can't recommend them enough.

Professorgb,

A Rebel XT (not XTi!) kit here cost about US$1600 due to import sales.  I should punish myself for not having bought one when I was in the USA in 2005, but by then I wasn't in stock photography and was quite happy with my now deceased Minolta 600si and my 2MPix Fuji, as the latter was only for having images in my website and sent to family and friends.

Regards,
Adelaide

What do you think about the Sigma. I'm thinking of one so I can afford 2.8. If I go to Canon L, I'd have to get f4 or wait a while longer.

The Sigma is a very nice lens.  It has quirks, for sure.  It's a pain to switch between AF and MF (I use MF for stock and AF for everything else).  It is heavy, as you would expect from a pro-level, f2.8 lens.  Filters cost a mint!  It is a tad slow to focus (on the 10D; I don't know about the 30D yet) and it's a lot noisier than an L lens.  It can scare the heck out of people you point it at.

BUT, it takes sharp, contrasty photos, particularly after about f3.5.  It is inexpensive, about $400 US.  I bought mine through Sigma4less.com and accidentally got a gray market version, something I try not to buy.  But, the company is solid and has good prices.

Above all, it's a fun lens to use and quite versatile.

sounds like a similar settup professorgb.

I just graduated from the 10D not long ago either.  I am using the tokina 12-24 for real estate photography.  Would like to get the 16-35 2.8L but that will have to wait as the tokina is working fine for now.

I also have the canon 24-70 2.8L which is a great all round lens.  Then a cheap canon 50 1.8 (a must have)... and that's it

I haden't taken notice to the 100-400 zoom before.  That would be pretty fun to have for wildlife.  But i think the 70-200 2.8 is first on the list. :)  ........ and mabey another body.... way too much to buy :(  I if one can ever be satisfied :S

I have rented the "AF 70-200mm AF-S VR 2.8"  for my Nikon D80 this weekend. (Only $35 cdn.) I cannot wait to try it out.

I am also going to order the 18-200 VR tommorrow. The kit lens that came with the D80 (18-135) is good but really needs VR. The camera shake is killing me.  :-[

I hike, mountain bike and canoe often so setting up a tripod is not always convenient when your on the go.

Congrats on the new gear!

I have the 70-200 f2.8 Nikon, it's probably the sharpest lens available for Nikon. If you do put it on a tripod, you should turn the VR off.

The other rule of thumb that some of us forget, is to use a shutter speed at least the same as the focal length you are shooting at...this will help with shake. the other thing to consider with a zoom like the 70-200, is that it is big & heavy, so generally a faster shutter is required just because the mass of the lens...........VR  I have found will give me 2 extra stops without shake.

and if you are using that shutter speed / focal length rule, - if you are using a camera with a conversion factor (1.6 on most non-pro DLSRs) you will need a faster shutterspeed than the inverse of the focal length.

if you are shooting at 200mm you will need at least a 1/320 sec to shoot sharp. (200*1.6=320)

Thats great! Congratulation.  You must be chomping at the bit.

I have the nikon 18-200 vr on order, should be here in a few weeks. Want to upgrade my body from D70s to D200 before June, but I need to earn some more money cause I just spent all my photo money on the lens.

Henry's Camera in Ontario have a good deal. You can trade in any equipment purchased from them before the end of the first year and they will give you half back what you paid (excluding batteries and cards) so thats why I only have until June.

Can't wait to see some new photos from you new body!
