How much does it cost to create a forum? I am trying to look for a free or low cost forum or website like "My Family" for a group of people I know to come together to chat and keep each other updated, any one has any idea?

to make things run smoothing, things you might want to purchase are

- a web domain (around $7.00/year)
- a web host (around $5.00 / month)

then install a forum, which is generally free.  this forum is smf forum phpbb is another forum.

There are many free forum sites, even Yahoo Groups can be an option (it works more as a mailing list, but you can also read/reply messages online and you can upload photos and files).  Many offer a paid account with extra features.

You can try runboard.com.

Peiling, I've had a  MyFamily site for 5-6 years now that is used by my extended family (spread out across half the u.s.).  There are well over 100 folks on it. I have never had any problems with it.  It is private, not open to the public, password, passname protected. Never had a problem there either. We have well over 2,000 pictures on the site, we write articles, share news, ........  has it's own private chat function....  your own email     yourpassname@the name of your site.com    all kinds of options.  I've never even came close to hitting the bandwidth limit... not even close... usually only  1-3% a day.

.......... I think it's great.   I think I'm paying around $115 US for the year and it is a 5 gig site. I've yet to come even near using 50% of it.  The group is very active, upwards of  22 hours a day..  we average around 30 family visit every day.  Some of the folks are 'on' all day long.  We have had a lot of fun on the site, used it for mass communication to the group..     I honestly cannot say anything negative about it or my experience with it.  Maybe 3 or 4 times a year, I've seen it down for maintenance and that only for a couple hours.
And no, I do not work for them or have stock in the company...LOL :D
However, I'd be happy to be used by them as a reference or testimony.  I really can't say anything bad about them at all.  I'll try to post a link to our public homepage if I can  figure out how to do it here.    8) - tom

I was successful with the link.    Please excuse the fact that I have not had the time to update the homepage (December issue still showing-actually it IS up to date, that's the lastest one we published).  Dogonian Magazine is something my brothers and I have been publishing since the mid-70's.  It is designed for our  extended outdoors family and relates to family business, trips and activities and things of interest to them specifically. It is not available to the public.  Lately we have not been able to keep up with it in our 'spare' time. We are trying to get another up for March.... but, we'll see  :D  Right now, I have 3 pending shoots for a 'legitimate' publisher... ha ha ha ha... no time for the homespun magazine.
In it's prime in the 90's the magazine was full color and usually about 70 pages, and quarterly.
But to the point.    I would highly reccomned  MyFamily.com

Hi.

I am on My Family for 4 years. Its a great site but needs to pay. So now looking for an alternative to My Family that is Free. So if anyone knows any alternative that is free and has similar functions (Its ok if it is not as dynamic.), I will be most grateful.

I have a group of international friends from all over the world with whom I went to a school with a few years ago and we want to keep in touch, just that its a problem to decide who pays for the site etc and its sad cos we are thinking of closing it down this year. So hoping to find an alternative.

Why not just use MySpace or Facebook, I am sure they have privacy settings that allow you to be by invitation only, as already said Google groups etc:

But for a few $$ a month or year there are hosting sites like GoDaddy which have software templates for free software you can install with a wizard, get a domain and some hosting and there is also DotNetNuke which can be set to registered users only.

I have a web resellers account but do not do free space  ;D

A great alternative to myfamily.com is Spokt.com. My family stopped using Myfamily in 2007 when we switch to Spokt. We've been very happy on spokt.com.

There may be renewed interest in this thread since myfamily.com announced that it will be shutting down in September.
